Kurobuta Bone-In Pork Chop (SGD $29) @ Rookery. . Served with fresh crunchy mesclun salad (spinach, red radish, cherry tomatoes), and crisp potato curly fries. . The large pork chop has a tender juicy texture, with good smoky savoury salty flavour. . Rather thin though, would have liked a thick cut for a more satisfying bite. . Invited tasting. . . . Smashed Avocado Toast (SGD $15) @ Rookery. . New brunch item!. . This was better than we expected. . The difference here is they've mixed the mashed avocado with corn kernels, creating a creamy grainy guacamole. . Served over crisp toasted sourdough bread, with bright cherry tomatoes, soft avocado slices, nicely poached eggs, crisp red radish, and sprinkled with crunchy furikake bits. . Has lovely vegetal eggy sweet bready sour flavours. Would order again. . Drop by if you're in the CBD! They also have a good range of drinks for an evening tipple. . Invited tasting courtesy of @rookerysg, @jeremeliang, @msginginly. . . . Rookery More details in profile & blog

Chocolate Lava Cake (SGD $14) @ Rookery. . Served with a rich creamy scoop of French vanilla bean gelato, plated with a mixed berry compote (strawberry and blueberry), and grainy almond crumble. . The dark chocolate lava cake has a moist, warm, soft spongy texture, with bold chocolatey bitter sweet flavour. . However, the filling of chocolate sauce could be more generous, as it barely flows out when cut. Still, a tasty dessert. . Invited tasting. . . . Rookery More details in profile & blog

Son-in-law Eggs ($7/4 Pieces). •HOSTED TASTING• According to chef, this is one popular dish that people return for. When asked about the reason for the name of this appetizer, chef shared that it’s actually a popular Thai street food and the story goes as a mother served deep-fried eggs to her son-in-law as a reminder/warning to treat her daughter well, or his valuable bits would be in danger. Hard boiled eggs are first cooked with a precise timing such that the yolks are still runny like the ones in soft boiled eggs, and subsequently deep fried till the exterior crisp up, just like those of fried fish balls. Served with Mama’s signature chili jam, star of the dish. Processed over 8 hours, the chili jam is a creation based on sambal, less spicy but sweeter as palm sugar is used, and has a jammy texture. Caters well to those who can’t take spicy stuff, but I would have preferred the actual sambal. Thank you @burpple for the invitation and @mamasoisg for the hosting!

Grilled BBQ Pork And Pan Seared Fillet Of Fish Pork has a unique taste with their sauce. Fish was good as it is not too dry. Overall is good.

Pork Lovers ($19) •HOSTED TASTING• Are you team sio bak or team lor bak? Get the best of both worlds in this pork belly platter! Deemed as Chef’s personal favourite, savour the Guangzhou style roasted pork belly that has its crispy skin rubbed with Sichuan pepper or the Taiwanese style braised pork belly that’s marinated with coca cola and soy sauce for its sweet caramelic savoriness. Seated near the kitchen, we could already smell the fragrant aroma of the roasted pork belly before it was served. Would have even been better if the pork bellies, both cooking methods, were cooked till tender and not as tough. Served with herb cucumber and greens. Dip in the in-house chili sauce for a complete experience. Thank you @burpple for the invitation and @mamasoisg for the hosting!

I think even Zac EFRON would approve of this SAFFRON cream pasta! 😉😉😉 . If you do not already know, saffron is a luxurious spice that makes rare appearances in dishes due to its high cost. 💰 To be honest, I still cannot pinpoint how saffron tastes like, but if the saffron is the main star in achieving the taste of this creamy pasta, I can safely say that I LOVE IT! ❤❤❤ . This plate of Stracci Ai Gamberi E Capesante ($27++) was really the star of the table! ⭐⭐⭐ My first time trying a saffron cream base! Features fresh handmade pasta with scallops, prawns, green peppercorn with saffron cream sauce. 😍 . I applaud the homemade pasta that is thin but with a good texture & chew so it doesn’t feel overly starchy. 😋😋😋 Smooth & luscious cream sauce coating every slice of this chewy pasta is simply heavenly. The green peppercorns are no longer spicy but add a pleasant popping sensation when you bite into them. 👍🏻 . There is room for improvement in the seafood though! Both the textures of the prawns & scallops were decent but I could not taste any natural sweetness from both of them at all. 😔 It was quite a disappointment compared to the pasta & sauce that really shone! . My advice is to SHARE this plate with someone as its 100% richness might burden your palate a bit. No matter how good a food item is, it’s always best to keep it at a small portion. Otherwise, this is a MUST-TRY at Pasta Brava in my opinion! 💕 What’s more - you can enjoy this at 1-for-1 for a 3-course meal using #BurppleBeyond - so worth it! ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

[Pasta] Green Eyed Monster & Spice It Up ($13.90) Kindred Folk is one of the rare places with both Burpple Beyond and Entertainer 1-for-1 where you can choose to use the deal for Pasta or Dessert. We used the pasta deal, where a single bowl of pasta would usually cost $13.90. This is pretty pricey for a single pasta dish at such a casual cafe, but actually very affordable and worth it after using the deal. Both the pastas were fantastic as the noodles were done al dense and I loved how firm they were. If you’re a fan of bold flavours, go for the Spice It Up which is a tom yum aglio olio linguine with sautéed prawns. For a slightly muted but aromatic dish, go for the Green Eyed Monster which is penne and chicken breast tossed in a Thai green curry cream sauce. We enjoyed both pastas and will be back to use the other deals too!

Matcha Latte (Hot, $6) Pleasantly surprised by how good this cup of matcha latte at Kindred Folk turned out. No extra points for elaborate latte art but props for trying at least. Anyway they don’t need any of those points for what a delightful cup of green tea goodness they delivered. The rich bright green colour of the matcha latte was a good sign, but my first sip of the beverage sent an explosion of thick matcha flavour and a lingering earthy bitterness right to the tastebuds. Definitely one of the best versions of matcha latte I’ve had recently and I really didn’t expect to find good matcha latte here! Such a nice surprise!

Ice Cream + Charcoal Waffles/ Brownie (~$9) Got the rose pistachio ice cream which surprised me initially at how pleasant it was, light, floral and nutty without feeling like I was eating a flower. The brownie was a good complement to it, rich and chocolately. My friend got the charcoal waffle which was the chewy type, and the charcoal flavour was present. Not sure how to feel about that but the milo ice cream made up for it.

Lavender is becoming one of the cafe hotspot in one of the older estates in Singapore, which is perfect for coffee lovers or just to get yourself an All-Day breakfast!! It felt so familiar when I set foot inside this cafe, but due to their new opening hours, you can drop by anytime before their last order at 4pm 🙌🏻 . . 🧀🥐🥔 Croque Monsieur ($15) — Google this term up and it will give you a search result of a French version “baked/grilled ham and cheese sandwich”. Butter taste on the croque was on point and not so dry than expected although I wanted to get more of that melted cheese. Nevertheless, portion was so much bigger than expected! 🥞 Pandan Pancake ($12) — Choice of either Vanilla or Coconut ice cream, oh and extremely generous scoop of it! We went with Coconut flavor as we thought Vanilla might be too basic HAHA 😛 Anyway, it was supposed to be their SG50 special but they kept it on their menu ever since due to high demand! And we were glad they did because the pancake was fluffy yet bursting with Singaporean pandan flavour 😋 🥓🥔 Rosti with Bratwurst ($18) — Gotta give plus points to their Rosti! Topped with sausage and sour cream, the golden brown and moist texture from the potatoes gave the rosti a crispy yet not so oily texture which we enjoyed the most and were able to finish it in every bite 👍🏻 🥤☕️ Iced Latte ($6.20) & Spiced Chai Latte ($6) — I’m sure there are many good coffees nearby but what’s special here is that they have a variety of basic coffees, specialized latte/mocha, all ranging at affordable prices from $4-$6.50! By the way, I love it when cafes like Tolido’s do latte art on your cup of coffee, definitely a plus point!! 😍 PSST, they also have 1 for 1 coffee at 3-4pm 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♂️ . . Expected damage: ~$20 nett Ambience: 4/5 Food Rating: 8/10

Beyond Cannot Use But Rosti Rules Beyond has one for one mains, which are nice enough. We tried the laksa (interesting) and the salmon (tasty) pasta, but it was the rosti that we really liked. Generous portions!

462 Prawn Laksa Pasta I have very low resistance for laksa pasta😬 I have been wanting to try the highly raved 462 Prawn Laksa Pasta ($17) from Tolido’s Expresso Nook and I finally made my way down to the bustling cafe today:) The place was pretty packed on a Saturday afternoon (had to wait in line for 20-30min) but the laksa pasta was worth the wait😍 The laksa gravy is rich, flavourful and infused with the fragrance of coconut milk, and it goes really well with the al dente pasta and succulent prawns. I polished my plate clean! Given its quality and quantity (portion is pretty big), the price is quite reasonable👍🏻 Officially one of my favourite laksa pasta in Singapore:)!

Prosciutto Wrapped Atlantic Halibut (Burrple 1-1: $32) 7/10 The food is good but service is not. Fish was cooked well, the asparagus was sweet and cherry tomatoes just the right amount of softness for me. I also liked the foam! Serving was small but not complaining cos it's 1-1. The front staff that day (Johny) seemed to be in a bad mood and snapped at us when we asked if we needed a reservation to get it (cos the person in front placed a reservation). Throughout the time we were there, he was pacing quickly around the place so we got the manager to take our order instead. There were other staff who were also there but everyone was too engrossed in huddling together and nobody seemed to be topping up glasses. When the table beside us asked for a refill, they didn't bother looking around the other tables to see if others also required more water. At the end of the meal the manager made Johny process our bill and it was painful hearing him say thank you. Hopefully it was just a bad day for him.

Roasted Stuffed Chicken ($28++) The Marmalade Pantry, through its brand new outlet opening at the heart of the city in ION Orchard, as well as a collaborative menu with Singapore’s very own Genevieve Lee (runner-up of MasterChef Singapore) has caused quite a stir in the ever-bustling food community. With a second visit to the flagship ION Orchard outlet planned in mind, a prerequisite dinner at one of its original outlets located at the Oasia Hotel Downtown was in order. Chic, elegant and modern, The Marmalade Pantry’s decor combined with the architectural genius of high ceilings of the hotel lobby was more than a pleasant welcome to the establishment. Their Roasted Stuffed Chicken ($28++) showcases a beautifully stuffed French-cut chicken breast with sun-dried tomatoes and portobello mushrooms, served with some simply seared asparagus, heirloom carrots and roasted potatoes before being rounded off with a seductive Dijon Velouté sauce. Simple and well-executed, with the stuffed tomatoes giving the chicken a delectable savouriness when paired with the sauce altogether. Worth a visit for entertaining work associates or even a laid-back weekend dinner.
