Connecticut Lobster Roll from Chunky Lobsters! The staff explained that the 'connecticut' lobster roll comes with a butter sauce, as compared to the original one which is plain and the cheese one which comes with melted cheese on top. I liked how they gave a lemon wedge, which you can squeeze for a fresh, citrusy note. Overall, the buttery mayo sauce went well with the juicy lobster chunks. The Tai To Kanzo / Red Snapper With Liver is topped with a thick cut, tender firm silky tai / red snapper fish fillet, dressed with usukuchi shoyu / light soy sauce, and a creamy grainy dollop of mashed kanzo / liver from the tai / red snapper fish. . This starts with a meaty sweet salty savoury flavour, then you get the earthy mineral savoury notes. Unique, a little like eating chilled foie gras in taste. . The Ni Maguro, also known as Duo Of Tuna is topped with a thick cut, aburi / lightly torched fillet of luxurious otoro / tuna fish belly which has lovely smoky sweet savoury fatty oily flavour, and blanketed with a thick cut, mirin rice wine marinated fillet of meaty akami / tuna fish loin with deep savoury sweet flavour. . 1-for-1 Mains (~$17.90) + Butterbeer Ordered Tandoori Fish, Hunky Dory Aglio Olio (+ prawns and onsen egg) and Butterbeer (separate order). The sauce for the Tandoori Fish was packed with spices and flavours however the fish is really small and consists of two small pieces. Doesn’t feel very worthy of the $17.90 pricetag. Hunky Dory Aglio Olio (not shown in pic) is pretty good, addition of the prawns and onsen egg is a superb choice! However do note that the addition of prawns & onsen egg (~$5.80) is not covered within the Burpple Beyond 1-for-1 Mains promotion, which we were quite dismayed to find out as the staff failed to convey this to us prior to ordering. The pasta by itself cost $10.90, wouldn’t say it’s very worth to obtain that as the free item since the free item is redeemed for the item of lower value. Butterbeer ($8) is good, worth a try as you don’t see this beverage commonly sold outside! Overall the cafe is quite aesthetically themed, might be a bit warm during the afternoon as there’s not much air-conditioning.

What A Masterpiece! We ordered the Pesto Cream Dory Fish and it was such a colorful masterpiece. The ingredients used were fresh. The pesto wasn’t overbearing and allowed the flavor of the dory fish to shine. The dory fish was silky, soft and decadent. It had a crispy layer of fish skin, which gave a nice change in texture to the velvety fish. The mashed potato ain’t your regular mashed potatoes. It was so smooth and buttery, and it absorbed all the essence of the dory fish and the pesto sauce. The dish was light on the palette yet so satisfactory. We also ordered the Butter beer (Homemade butterscotch soda, $8) excluded from the 1-for-1 deal and it was totally worth it. The soda wasn’t as sweet, with a hint of bitterness and was fragrant. The foam was sweet, smooth and flavorful, which blended harmoniously with the soda. However, it gets sweeter as you drink because of the foam. Overall, it was truly a unique experience with great ambience. Definitely coming back again!

Have Your KEK And Eat It Too 😄 If you are considering “zi char” for takeaway or delivery, @kengengkee should be at the top of your list. My recent dinner there was very satisfying as usual. Based on that meal, these are the dishes by Head Chef & Co-owner Wayne and his team that I feel are worth ordering because they should travel well too: 1. Salted Egg Squid (small: $18) - The slightly chewy rings of squid are evenly coated in a dryish style of slightly spicy, creamy salted egg paste. Highly addictive (especially with a cold beer). 2. “Hae Chor” (Prawn Rolls) - Wrapped in delicate, thin beancurd skin is a generous amount of juicy and tasty filling composed of minced prawns, pork and water chestnut. I had three at one go because yeah, they’re totally irresistible. 3. Coffee Pork Ribs (small: $15) - Hand on my heart, KEK does one of the best renditions around. Theirs feature large, boneless pieces of meat that are unfailingly tender, fragrant and delicious from a sweet and rich caramelly coffee marinate. 4. “Har Jeong Gai” (small: $12) - The prawn paste chicken is quite literally a flavourbomb on bones, so be warned, they are easy to overeat. 5. “Nai Bai” with garlic (small: $8) - A simple yet tasty stirfry. 6. Sambal French Beans with Minced Pork (small: $8) - Crisp, juicy vegetable with some meat and a bit of a spicy kick is appetising for sure. There is one other key thing that can’t be “dabao-ed” and that is the warm and friendly service by the other Co-owner Paul Liew who runs the front-of-house. I look forward to experiencing it first-hand again once this situation with the coronavirus improves and we can all return to dining out with peace of mind.

The Claypot Liver That Is To-Die-For! @kengengkee (also known as "KEK Seafood") is a MICHELIN Plate Restaurant I am familiar with as it’s one of my family favourites for “zi char”. Seeing forever-cheerful Paul, his brother, Head Wayne and the rest of their family never fails to spark joy. Having dined at KEK Seafood several times, I obviously have my must-haves, of which the Claypot Liver is tops. It is imperative to be enjoyed in the unique KEK style, that is with plain white rice popped in and given a good stir. Trust me, you do not know how sublime liver can be until you‘ve tried this. Apart from having a very good supplier because the liver tastes really fresh, the kitchen team treats the cooking of the liver like a science to ensure it arrives perfectly cooked (it has to be soft!) on the customer’s table. So if the customer is seated in the air-conditioned area, which happens to be twice as far from the kitchen as a customer seated in the al fresco section, cooking time is halved. This is because they take into consideration that the liver will continue to cook in the claypot as it’s being carried all the way there by the wait staff. Honestly, I was so impressed when I heard this.

Salted Egg Sotong ($18, Small) I was disappointed that the salted egg sotong was dry instead of in a creamy salted egg sauce, as I had erroneously expected. Contrary to what many reviewers have said, I did not enjoy this dish very much. The salted egg flavour was lost in the thick starchy batter and the whole dish was far too salty and dry, it had me drinking gulps of water after every squid ring.

You Can Now Drive-Thru And Pick Up This Fabulous Burger Voted #1 In A Blind Taste Test By “The Straits Times”. BurgerLabo-ing in the time of COVID19 means getting my order of their “Basic Burger” ($18) to takeaway. Fortunately, the fully-assembled creation travels really well. In between the fluffy customised buns by @bakerybrera is 120gms of juicy and beautifully-charred premium beef patty topped with melted cheese, housemade shio kombu mayo, fresh tomato and lettuce. I must confess I couldn’t quite wait till I reached home to scoff mine 😂 But my family members assured me their respective BB burgers to be most enjoyable when they ate it. I also found out that as of today, the Naked Finn team has made takeaway even more convenient with a drive-thru service. NEW Bento Sets as well as a list of Ready-To-Cook frozen items have also been added to this menu. The latter includes marinated chicken leg (recipe by Chef Julien Royer of Three MICHELIN Starred Odette restaurant) and grilled organic cauliflower soup. All of these can all be picked up without leaving your car but do remember to still wear a mask when you leave your home. The Famous Basic Burger Of BurgerLabo Is Available Here And It’s Even Tastier Now! When we learnt of the recent developments made to the now-famous Basic Burger (yes, besides BurgerLabo, you can get it here too), it was impossible to not order one. Besides the switch to customised buns from @bakerybrera which means being able to resize the patty to 120gms and lowering the price to $18++, the sauce is the latest component to be tweaked. It now features a calamansi kosho mayo which really enhances the beefiness and overall deliciousness of the burger. My friend Angeline and I were very impressed and enjoyed every bite of it.

Baked Otah ($20++) Naked Finn’s take on the Otah has the gonads and mantle of farmed local scallops buried within the rempah paste. The shallow dish means the Otah is flattish in form and dryer than moist. It is aromatic and quite spicy though so a little goes a long way. Good for sharing if you enjoy bold flavours.
