Claypot Mee Tai Mak Came here with great anticipation, having tried it before and really liked it when it was at Clementi! Feels like the standard has dropped though - a little too watery this time.
My family popped by this coffeeshop in Macpherson and when I saw that 136 Hong Kong Street Fish Head Steamboat is situated here, I knew that I had to get their famed Claypot Braised Mee Tai mak ($8) 😍 . This bubbling wok hei goodness truly lives up to its name. Smooth and bouncy, the mee tai mak blended well with the umami-laden gravy. We were surprised to find bits of fried egg and chai poh inside which added am interesting texture to the dish. Mixing the raw egg yolk into the gravy, it definitely brought the whole dish to a whole new level. This makes for an ultimate comfort food as it wasn't too salty and starchy. Added some chilli in for a fiery kick and it was indeed a good choice 😋 . We also added on the Seafood Spinach Soup ($3.80) from another stall. It came loaded with spinach, minced meat, egg, wolf berries, and a large prawn. The soup was was sweet from the spinach and wolfberries, and seemed to be infused with a corn flavour. It was slightly underwhelming as compared to other spinach soup stalls which I have tried. Nevertheless, it still makes for a healthy and wholesome meal! . Red Grouper Fish Head Steamboat Served to your table with a small wood plank below it. It has charcoal that's burning from within. The soup's boiling and there's lots of wongbok (looking like they've been cooked for some time, soft and have absorbed all the goodness of the broth), chunks of red grouper, seaweed. Dive deeper and you'll find big pieces of yam (OMG MY FAV IN THIS POT)! The soup is addictive, exuding the light ginger taste. It tastes almost as thou some carnation milk has been added, but no. It's pure goodness boiled for a long time i guess! I also found some small bits of preserved vege in the soup (those added to congee). They're totally not stingy with the ingredients. This costs $25 and soup is refillable! But, i find that the refilled broth tastes much lighter, probably as the fish and vege werent boiled continuously in it. Again, the chilli dip in light orangey red lits up the taste of the fish. ANOTHER MUST ORDER HERE. If you're in a group of 3 or 4, just go for the medium one at $30! I enjoyed sipping on the soup even under the hot weather. Try it &i hope you'll like it as much as i do!

[jelly星期五] Smoked Crabs with Bacon $38/kg. This portion 1.4kg. 🦀 Newly launched. Different cooking style by using smoked/bbq bacon and loads of whole garlic to cook these crabs compared to the usual chillied, black pepper or salted egg yolk ones. 🦀 A pity all the flavours were only on the surface, none on the flesh though. But crab meat were indeed fresh and firm. Love the savoury touch from the bacon and for those we love garlic, do not miss these on the plate. They were so good, you tot you're eating potatoes! 🦀 A crappy morning to start with but shall end it with an enjoyable crabby meal. 🦀 Pan Zhong Wu 盘中屋 Blk 302 Ubi Ave 1 ACX food court, Unit 01-09 Singapore 400302 Tel: 85752272/ 91217272 Opens daily 11am - 10pm
🦀 Holy crab yay school's out here's freedom!! Yeah but I'm totally unemployed now someone hire me please 😂
Spent yet another free day tucking into a no-frills zichar affair at this homegrown eatery serving a variety of Chinese delicacies invoking much nostalgia through a heartwarming meal. It doesn't hurt that the place is also clean, bare & brightly lighted - order a bucket of beer to go along & any typical zichar can be our local 'bar hangout', agree? Was told that the founder Alex Lim first started off as a chef, towards logistics & finally back to this family-owned F&B business, opened only last November. I'm a big fan of his sambal pomfret (own sambal chili recipe), individual reviews to be up soon! . •Smoke Crabs w/ Bacon ($38/kg) •Signature Kangkong in Claypot ($8/$12/$16) •Fried Mee Sua ($5/$8/$12) •Pork Ribs w/ Marmite ($12/$18/$24) •Salted Egg Crispy Pumpkin ($12/$18/$24) 💕 •Signature Sambal Pomfret (Seasonal Price) 💕 •Signature Iced Beancurd ($6/$12) . "Healthy" mala with lots of vegetables (less spicy) followed by black pearl MSW durian nearby. My throat protests. #sgfood #sgfoodie #sghawker #instafood #mala #burpple
It came as a surprise to find a really good bowl of mala at this nondescript coffeeshop parked below a low-rise HDB flat. . Unlike some mala places, the ingredients here are charged by the number of ingredients picked, and not by weight. For 6 types of vegetables, we paid $8 and this is just nice for both of us! Probably the cheapest we have spent on mala to date. Best eaten with a bowl of fluffy rice, this bowl was served with mouth-watering aroma. Personal favourites are bean threads, fried beancurd sheets, wood ear, golden and enoki mushrooms (wow, just realised how big of a mushroom fan we are!), potato noodles, and kai lan (but it ran out today so we got dou miao, Doug’s fav). Who needs meat when veggies are so amazing in a big bowl of yummy mala? . The mala xiang guo is really fragrant, and their potato noodles are a must order - thin, chewy and really delightful. The enoki mushrooms did well in absorbing some flavour from the mala paste, and tasted savoury and slightly peppery. . For zhong la (中辣), the dish was sufficiently spicy, and a tad numb but not overly tingly, plus it wasnt drizzled with peppercorns all over! We asked for less oil and the dish came definitely not slurpy oily! Seasoned with nuts and coriander, they make for a great combination when tossed around in the piquant mala sauce. Slightly savoury but not overpowering, the sauce allowed the flavor to shine through. This is a great place to indulge in an addictively flavoursome bowl of mala hot pot. .
