Selera Rasa’s Nasi Lemak basmati rice is really fragrant! The sambal chilli and otah also had the right amount of spiciness.

Used to be one of my favourites, but quality has been dropping/inconsistent in the last few years - the basmati rice is no longer as fragrant or well cooked as before, kinda overcooked as the rice grains broke apart fairly easily. Prices have been steadily increasing as well. Sigh.

Over at Adam Road Food Centre, there are a number of stalls selling nasi lemak however, only two neighboring stalls stood out among the rest.

Since it is my first time there, I do not know which is the better one but I decided to go for Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak simply for the fact that they do not serve fried peanuts which I am not very fond of.

The seven options on their menu have interesting names, ranging from "Flash Meal" that consists the very basics like ikan bilis and egg with coconut rice, cucumber slices and sambal chili ($2.90) to the "Royal Rumble" ($5.90) which contained everything they have like fried chicken wing and ikan kuning.

I ordered the "Royal Flush" ($5.40) which consists of a fried chicken wing, an otah wrapped in banana leaf, a begedil, a fried egg, ikan bilis, sambal chili and a few slices of cucumber together with coconut rice.

The stall uses basmati rice which is low in GI (Glycemic Index) and can particularly help manage glucose levels in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Anyway, the rice is extremely light and fluffy and full of pandan fragrance with hints of savory notes to it.

The sambal chili is more sweet than spicy and goes rather well with the rice.

I have extremely high hopes for the chicken wing but alas, it is cold to the touch while the marinade is slightly underwhelming. The only redemption is that the chicken tastes fresh and the batter is still crispy.

There is a certain flavor in this begedil not found in other begedils which makes it very appealing.

The otah is cold as well but there is a spicy kick to it that I like.

The ikan bilis are delightfully crunchy.

The egg yolk is fully cooked instead of being runny.

To me, the basmati rice is the highlight of the meal and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My only gripe is that other than the rice, everything else on the plate is served cold.

I can turn a blind eye to the fried egg, begedil and otah but cold chicken wing?

If only the fried chicken wing is served hot, the over all experience would have been more pleasant.

But, what do I know?

Apparently, Selera Rasa Nasi Lemak is the preferred breakfast for the Sultan of Brunei each time he is here in Singapore. Also, PM Lee once hosted Indonesia's President Joko Widodo for breakfast and guess what is on the menu?

While it might be the most famous nasi lemak in Singapore but is it truly the best?

Queued around 45min to get my food despite the queue was about 9 or 10 people. The service was really really really slow.

The first sentence popped out from my mind after the first bite was nothing than “taste okay but seriously overrated”. #GimmeBackMy45min

To be fair, it’s still a delicious nasi lemak, crispy chicken wing (but not really warm) & nice otah... perhaps less expectations come less disappointments.

Below are the menu from the stall:

Set A ($2.90):
Ikan bilis & egg.

Set B/ C/ D ($3.90):
Fish/ chicken wing/ otah with ikan bilis & egg.

Set E ($4.90):
Chicken wing & otah with ikan bilis & egg.

Set F ($5.40):
Chicken wing, otaku & begedil with ikan bilis & egg.

Set G ($5.90):
Fish, Chicken wing, otah & begedil with ikan bilis & egg.

Queue’s as long but standard seems to have fallen. I’ve been a long time fan of Selera cause of the fragrant basmati rice. Today, I was sorely disappointed, chicken was not tender, fish seems over-fried and literally everything was not served warm enough. sadness :(

There was a queue of about 9 or 10 people when I reached.
Adam No.1 Nasi Lemak stall was closed.
Waited for only about 15 min to get my food. (Shorter wait time due to Ramadan?)
There's a small white board at the front of the stall that informed customers that 'only set A and C (were) left'.

The (sambal) chilli is good! It looks like it packs a punch, but it is actually more sweet than savoury. Very mild chilli. If you are one of those who don't like sweet chilli, this may not be for you.

The chicken wing is crispy but not warm enough. Not exactly cold, but just not warm enough.

Ikan bilis is crunchy but serving is rather small. And excess oil isn't drained too.

Fried egg is like the ikan bilis, very oily.

For the queue, I would expect the food to be hot/ piping hot.

The basmati rice is the warmest item on my plate.

Overall, quite nice, but overrated, imo.

Btw, something should be done to manage the mynah (birds) population there. They are a nuisance. There are spikes on some of the canopies/ awnings/ roofs to keep them away, but the spikes are just not effective. The birds have been conditioned and they are unafraid of humans. If the table next to you has an unreturned plate that is not cleared in time, they will very quickly swarmed around that table to peck at the food. They are always nearby and quite a number will keep flying over your head as you eat. At least that's what happened in the afternoon. Might be better at night. Anyway, please just clear your own table and return your own plate.🙏🏼👌🏾

Set A ($2.90): 'flash meal' with only basic ingredients like ikan bilis & egg.
