From Seng Heng Hainanese Chicken Rice
This plate of Roast Chicken Rice $3.90 with egg.
Fluffy fragrant rice added sweet dark soy sauce.
Tender meat texture, tasty chicken skin.

There’s always a long queue at this stall and today I finally found out why. The chicken is soft and tender, generous in portion and the rice is served piping hot and fragrant, without being overly mushy or oily. Altogether one of the better chicken rice stalls around, highly recommended!

At Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre, it's a tight competition between rival stalls Fu Ji Hainanese Chicken Rice and Seng Heng Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice for the best chicken rice. Both sport long lines during peak hours and both have equally tender and tasty chicken meat. Fu Ji, however, only serves steamed chicken while Seng Heng serves both the roasted and steamed versions (a plus point for sure)(from $3). In the end, it boils down to the simplest of ingredients — the rice. According to Tastemaker Russell Leong, who ate at both stalls, Seng Heng's version is much "tastier, had less fat from the chicken within, and every grain was packed full of flavour". To tip the scales even more, Seng Heng gains bonus points for providing ginger sauce!

Rice here was more fragrant than Fu Ji and not overly greasy, so that was a win for me. Personally felt that chicken was tender but flavours did not stand out - the chili was great tho. Decent enough for a satisfying meal!

Fu Ji's competition is Seng Heng Hainanese Boneless Chick-yeah, I'm just gonna call it Seng Heng. Both stalls pride themselves on steamed chicken rice, so you know the rivalry runs deep.

Both of them are roughly on par with the quality of their poultry in terms of tenderness and tastiness, so there has to be something to break the deadlock. That something is the all important yet oft overlooked rice, which is Seng Heng's ace up its sleeve.

It was tastier than Fu Ji's rice, which was heavier, richer, and less flavorful, while Seng Heng's was lighter (albeit somewhat harder, although that is easily rectified by generous splashes of soup onto the rice), had less fat from the chicken within, and every grain was packed full of flavor.

Now, it's up to you folks to decide which stall is the ultimate victor of this vicious chicken rice war.

Latergram: Lunch was chicken rice from this stall. Most popular chicken rice at Bukit Timah Food Centre :-)
