We come here only for two things - their soba, and their set meals! The soba is great because Shimbashi gets the texture right, by having the noodles served a little hard. This is another reason we prefer the cold to the hot soba, because for the latter, if you don't have the noodles quickly, they become soggy. :( The restaurant serves the cold soba with dipping sauce, which may be a little salty so don't dip all your noodles in without trying it first, because it may not be to everyone's liking. Add some wasabi for an additional kick to your noodles!

Shimbashi is really generous with their set meals, with the above set costing around $22.80++. For the size of the don and the sides provided (including salad, croquette, watermelon and chawanmushi), it is a really good deal! The set is available on weekday afternoons and evenings, and for the entire day on weekends. So, do get it if you are feeling really hungry!

Takane Ruby Seiro
chilled takane ruby buckwheat noodle served with dipping sauce

Felt that the soba wasn’t impressive enough for a specialty soba shop. It was alright but still lacked the very qq texture I had expected (I had one really good one once but I can’t rmb where 😭). The broth is nice tho! It’s even nicer when you add the bonito broth (that they provide in a flask at every table). Tempura was crunchy, liked the pumpkin best, the rest were alright but I found the shrimp one a bit floury. The chicken soba soup had a more savoury-sweet taste, but was too heavy. The leek in it was really nice! The rest of the ingredients were pretty standard. Not sure if I’ll return specially for this, as my go-to Japanese restaurant (sakuraya at west coast plaza) serves yummier soba at a cheaper price point.

Chilled plain noodle served with beef, mushrooms, carrot, radish, fried beancurd, sweet bean and soft boiled egg in warm dipping broth

Feature in two different servings:
🍜Hot Takane Ruby Autumn Soba.
Soup version of soba, served with Japanese mushrooms, chicken , fishcake, fried beancurd, vegetables and tiger prawn tempura.
💰$24.8
🍜Takane Ruby Autumn Tempura Seiro ($24.80).
Chilled version of soba, served with dipping sauce and come with tiger prawns, Japanese mushrooms and vegetables tempura.
💰$24.8 or $14.8 without tempura.

I prefer the chilled version, the chewy texture of soba goes well with the refreshing dipping sauce with wasabi.
