From the Burpple community

I rarely eat fried food, but when I do... It's tempura.

Tucked in a rather inconspicuous corner of Westgate, I discovered Akimitsu while surfing Burpple. Ordered their Signature Tendon ($14.90++); it comes with a side of miso soup, tiny chawanmushi (which they forgot about until I asked them about it) & free flow pickled radish.

My Tendon arrived teeming with tempura on top, which seems to be the norm no matter where I dine. Finished the rice way before the ingredients, so I had to deal with the carb-less oiliness on its own towards the end.

Oiliness notwithstanding, I liked how fresh the ingredients were & how they weren't overcooked. In particular, the prawn & the white fish - still moist inside, & didn't taste like the ocean. The squid wasn't rubbery, either.

The variety of vegetables you get in this is also impressive: Shiitake mushroom, carrot, french bean, young corn, eggplant, nori, pumpkin, ... Dang.

I'd intended to have a simple dinner, but it evolved into this. No regrets, though!

Hands down my favourite tendon restaurant! They serve a huge bowl of tendon at a very reasonable price! Not sure what’s with the bad reviews on Google, but to me, this is a very good bowl of tendon. Well marinated and generous serving of tempura!

Shitamachi Tendon Akimitsu is apparently pretty famous in Asakusa and Singapore was their first overseas expansion, so I was pretty excited when I chanced upon an outlet in Westgate.

Akimitsu’s Signature Tendon [$14.90] brims with tempura of prawn, white fish, egg, seaweed and assorted vegetables. You can’t fault it on the generous portion of the dish, but the whole thing is really oily. Every bite fills my mouth with greasiness.

Next to Osaka ohsho at Westgate and under the same management, akimitsu is a restaurant specializing Tendon. The Tendon is not mind-blowingly delicious but it's pretty decent.

the tendon in this bowl brings to mind a hasty amalgamation of two of the more popular brands in Singapore - Ginza Tendon Itsuki and Tempura Kohaku. There is the bowl of chawanmushi, the now-ubiquitous pot of beansprouts, the spicy sauce and the mountain of tempura that could feed an army. I counted 12 pieces of tempura, consisting of a slice of seaweed, a fillet of white fish, 2 prawns, 2 long beans, a slice of carrot, eggplant and pumpkin, a ear of baby corn and a shiitake mushroom. oh and an oozy tempura egg.
well, not so oozy.
This joint tries to make everyone happy with all the trimmings. however, the prawns are slightly limp, the egg is slightly over cooked, there is slightly too little sauce and the beansprouts are way too salty. I liked the white fish, though. it had a firm bite which contrasted the crisp batter.
a few tweaks here and there, and this place could be much better! otherwise, i’d travel a bit further for better tempura at the other mentioned joints. .

My first time seeing a kakiage tempura in the tendon scene! Since it reminded me of my fond memories with the one that comes in certain instant udon cups, I decided to give this tendon a try. Made of whitefish, silverfish, prawn and assorted vegetables, the tempura was a delight for the first few bites with the dashi dip successfully balancing the heaviness on the palate. But the greasiness and gelatness soon caught up and there was nothing the dashi dip could do to help, even when it was all poured over the tendon.
