Bookmark this simple yet downright delicious porridge along Jalan Hang Lekir for a solid breakfast before the work day begins (they're open from 4am!). Get the signature Raw Fish Porridge (RM7) that comes piping hot and drizzled with sesame oil. Throw in the accompanying raw slices of carp, fresh ginger and coriander, stir and enjoy. Other favourites on the menu include the Crispy Innards Porridge (RM5.50) and the Homemade Pork Ball Porridge (RM5.50).

I’d gladly make a trip to Petaling Street just for this delicious bowl of porridge. Each bowl is served piping hot that’s drizzled with a little sesame oil. It’s so hot that the raw fish cooks immediately when thrown in! And they’re very generously with the fish slices too. Only three tables at this stall, so be prepared to share.

Cheap and good!

It's sweet red sauce is so different from what you can find elsewhere. This is a small portion.

It's side by side another stall that serves about the same thing but I really prefer this one.

It turns out Hon Kee's accolades aren't limited to its early opening hours (from 6am) and their sashimi-and-porridge ingenuity. The time-honoured stall also serves up Chee Cheong Fun (RM3.50) worth trekking down to Chinatown for. Breakfast buffs will want to pay this one a visit, along with a friend to share the morning meal. The opaque, white flat rice noodles offer a slightly chewy bite next to its sweet-spicy sauces. Alternatively, succumb to the comfort that comes with their piping hot bowl of Fresh Raw Fish Porridge (RM6.50)! The foolproof combination of carp sashimi and warm porridge does it everytime.

This little nook nestled along Chinatown's busiest street opens as early as 5am, and its 69-year-old recipe for heartwarming porridge has never failed to make our mornings better. Before the bustle begins, walk down the street for breakfast with a friend. The Fresh Raw Fish Porridge (RM7) is a champion's combo of silky smooth porridge and carp sashimi topped with coriander and sliced ginger. When dunked into the piping hot porridge, the thinly sliced fish is cooked to melt-in-your-mouth freshness. The other special to look out for is the Fresh Frog Porridge (RM18) that comes with a claypot of tender frog legs slicked in sweet, gingery sauce. If you love yau char kuey like we do, RM3 a plate will be a no-brainer. The dough is absolutely delicious dipped into warm, thick porridge.

Can't get this anywhere else. That fresh fish gets all warmed up, turning from translucent to opaque as you mix it into the porridge. The combination is pure gold. If you're here early enough, the street will be peace and quiet and the cool breeze might join you for breakfast.
