Was walking around Ang Mo Kio Town Centre recently and found out about a new western stall that is named Solace on Us that is located within the coffeeshop at Blk 727 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 — the same coffeeshop also houses an outlet of Pancake King; a chain that serves up Min Jiang Kueh that also retails a good variety of cakes as well. Whilst we found the name of the western stall to be interesting, it was even more noteworthy that the stall’s tagline is a continuation of its name; the tagline being “Comfort Food For You” — pretty deep we would say. Occupying a corner stall that is beside the stall serving up mixed economy rice, Solace On Us is a stall that is pretty easy to spot; the black signboard with cursive writing for its name is one that we found difficult to miss. Whilst serving up the usual dishes that one would be able to find in most Western cuisine stalls situated in coffeeshops and hawker centres in the neighbourhood such as Aglio Olio pasta and Chicken / Pork Chip etc., Solace On Us does have quite a number of unique dishes that they seem to have created or are a little bit more difficult to find in western stalls set in the same environment as themselves — this would include the Pizza section, which comprises of several pizzas all sold in 8-inch portions, as well as a Prawn Namjin Cream Pasta and a Scallop Risotto; the latter especially worthy of a mention since it is priced below $10 at $9.90. Apart from Mains, Pasta and Pizza, Solace On Us also serves up a small variety of soups, as well as a number of sides that could be classed as an add-on to a main or as an ala-carte order.

On first look, the Prawn Namjin Cream Pasta does sound like a pasta with a Korean infusion but it turns out that the Prawn Namjin Cream Pasta was one that came with a Thai influence; the Namjin in the name refers to the Nam Jin which is a Thai dipping sauce that is usually enjoyed with seafood. Solace On Us had taken the Nam Jin dipping sauce and had incorporated it into the cream sauce for their pasta; aptly pairing the Nam Jin-infused cream pasta with prawns that would seemingly be a classic Thai combination of flavours. The choice of pasta that Solace On Us has went with for the Prawn Namjin Cream Pasta was the Linguine; the Linguine here was done al-dente and was laced with much of the spices that one would find in the Namjin dipping sauce. The infusion of the Namjin dipping sauce with the cream sauce of the pasta was a great move; this removes much of the heaviness that comes with typical cream-based pasta that makes such pastas jelak. There is a slight hint of sweetness in the Namjin Cream that one would find with Thai Sweet Chili Sauce, though not quite as dense or sweet, whilst it was also garlicky and perfumed with a hint of coriander; all that with that umami note of fish sauce at play — these notes perfectly cutting through that creaminess, whilst pairs well with the prawns that came with a good bite and its own natural sweetness. Overall, a decent attempt for an interesting fusion of flavours that we had yet to come across from a Western cuisine stall in a coffeeshop.

Having only tried one item of the many that they have to offer, Solace On Us does seem to have an interesting take with its Western fare to be served up from a coffeeshop stall — the Prawn Namjin Cream Pasta being one item where they have created a flavour that was unique to their own. One thing of particular note about Solace On Us would be how affordably-priced their Western fare is — there is nothing on the menu that is priced above $10; that is with the exception of two items which are the Wagyu Burger and the Striploin Steak listed at $10.50 and $12.50. This does make Solace On Us a pretty appealing option for those residing in the neighbourhood, considering how the food are priced in a way that it would not break the bank — an important consideration when it comes to stalls that are located within the heartlands. Needless to say, Solace On Us does seem like a pretty down-to-earth outfit that seems to be run by young hawkerpreneurs that are ready to get their hands down dirty to start their business in the local F&B scene. We would be looking forward to return to give their Scallop Risotto a go if we are around Ang Mo Kio without having a clue on what to eat whilst being there.
