Only a few ingredients go into this simple yet satisfying dish: finely minced pork, a slightly soft-centred egg, chopped coriander and lashings of fragrant garlic oil. In the hands of the Thai lady cook, the porridge is prepared Teochew style, which means the rice grains are still intact and not reduced to a smooth mush.
P.S. As Sweet Basil is a small sized casual eatery, I recommend to avoid going there during the peak lunch hour period if possible.

I thought the signature dish at this small, unassuming eatery was appetising and authentic in taste. Well, with two Thai chefs manning the kitchen, it should come as no surprise.
The ultra-fine strands of Thai "kway teow" was cooked in a clear soup with beansprouts and minced pork, and oomphed up with all the necessary Thai condiments of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, ground peanuts, fried garlic oil and chilli flakes (if you like it spicy). There're a couple of other toppings too, such as slices of fish cake, one fried "wantan", a solo meatball and a slice of slow-cooked pork shoulder. Not very much I know but for $5.50, I can't complain.
They also sell small bowls of shatteringly crunchy, oh-so-bad-for-you deepfried chicken skin pieces at $2. I liken it to a heart attack donned in the most persuasive of disguises. But that didn't stop me from ordering $4 worth for takeaway to munch on later...
