We use to frequent this joint on an almost weekly basis when it first opened. Owned by a friendly ex-national basketball player from China (I think it's still his family who runs it), we were drawn to the casual vibe and tasty, authentic cuisine. Our must-have's included handmade boiled dumplings, pan-fried Chinese pancakes, minced pork dry noodles and chilled, garlic-overloaded vegetable appetisers (the soft, skinless eggplant's my favourite!).
Last night was my first trip back in at least two years. The place looked pretty much the same and so did most of the menu. However, the original robust level of seasoning in their food seemed to have been muted somewhat. Don't get me wrong - the food is still tasty (and reasonably-priced) but I do miss the slightly heavy-handed salting and seasoning that gave their dishes an extra mouthwatering edge.

A must-order everytime we are here 👌🏻

Best dumplings in all of SG 🤩

I taught two classes, was planning to go home and nap when I have a call from my friend Sarah who said she was already at a different studio and had signed in for a Scorpion Backbends workshop we had been threatening to go to. It started in 20 minutes. One thing I love about Singapore is that the traffic is so efficient even tho it was the other side of town I knew I could make it. She signed me in as I jumped in a taxi. Two and half hours of backbends later and I still hadn’t had lunch, I was starving! I had signed myself up for a Yin class on the east coast that evening (and also put some lovely Lululemon leggings aside to take advantage of my staff discount!) so we headed over to Tall Girl Chinese. A veggie heaven on East Coast Road, I chowed down on my fave shredded bean curd. It’s a dish served cold with shredded carrots and cucumber, in a magical sauce which I don’t know what it contains. In the background is my second fave, dou miao, or pea shoots, marinated in another amazingly flavourful sauce. We also had the bitter gourd and shredded salted egg which isn’t pictured. First time I tried it and it is very bitter, not sure I’ll have that again! Afterwards I somehow managed the Zen class meaning I taught or did over 5 hours of yoga yesterday - hence lack of posts and why im walking like John Wayne today! #shreddedbeancurd #beancurd #chinese #chinesefood #veggiefood #vegetarian #tallgirlchinese

Like I have mentioned before, finding local veggie food is hard here, and although Chinese isn’t technically “local”, seeing as nearly 70% of the population are of Chinese heritage it’s still sorta counts right! My friend, also a veggie who has lived in Singapore for almost 8 years recommended Tall Girl Chinese on East Coast Road as an excellent option for vegetarians. It also happens to be opposite the studio I work at, so after catching a class we crossed the road and had a feast! From the top right clockwise we have my favourite, shredded bean curd, so incredibly delicious, celery and cashews nuts, vegetarian noodles with courgette and carrots, and last but not least marinated dou miou (pea shoots). If you swipe to the end, you will also see we had some veggie dumplings too 🤤 All the dishes we had were incredible, I took the leftovers for a post teaching snack. I cannot wait to go back and try even more of the vegetarian offerings! If you’re wondering about the name by the way, this place is owned by ex professional Singaporean basketballers!! Even if it’s not in your neck of the woods it is well worth a detour!
