Tarte by Cheryl Koh (Shaw Centre)

One of life’s greatest gastronomic indulgences can be found at Tarte by Cheryl Koh, a spin-off by the Les Amis Group with Les Amis restaurant’s pastry chef Cheryl Koh, which opened in April 2015. In a span of a year, chef Cheryl was awarded ‘Asia’s Best Pastry Chef’ in the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in 2016. Emerging from a tiny den along the quaint corner street of the Shaw Centre, this retail concept is as straightforward as its moniker – selling artisanal tarts and other confectionaries baked from scratch all day with only the best available ingredients sourced from around the world that are rare to find in Singapore. Talking about her inspiration behind Tarte, she says, “I want guests to enjoy the tarts as I would serve them at Les Amis restaurant: freshly made with good ingredients and best fruits of the season. I aim to make the best version of the simplest desserts. I focus mainly on tarts because of the great combination of pastry, flavours, colours and textures.” In 2018, Tarte by Cheryl Koh expanded its operations to include a cosy dining area. This allows the team to push the envelope when it comes to crafting guest’s dining experience. With an expanded menu list, coffee and tea is no longer an afterthought. Instead, it plays a vital supporting role in elevating the experience and taste profiles of the desserts.

This is a tea session you would not want to miss. And only THREE more weeks left~

Known for their delectable tarts, I’ve been waiting for Tarte to bring back their afternoon tea set. So was thrilled to hear about their collaboration with @brandfitsg for this exclusive Premium Korean Strawberry Afternoon Tea.

Expect mouth-watering savouries such as Egg Mimosa Croissant Sandwich and Mushroom Tartlet before diving into beautifully crafted viennoiserie and desserts. Adorned with premium Korean strawberries (Jukhyang and MerryQueen), it’s a berry great way to welcome Springtime!

Afternoon Tea Hours (Daily till 25 April 2021):
First session, 1pm - 3pm
Second session, 3pm - 5pm

$60++ per person with a choice of coffee or tea

Milo-coffee ganache in espresso tart shell.

Strong coffee taste with no hint of Milo at all which I like because Milo usually taste like cheapo chocolate. Really liked the rich coffee ganache and it’s one of the cheaper, under $10 tarts here.

Had been making more recent visits to Tarte by Cheryl Koh these days, thanks to a friend who actually can’t seem to have enough of their tarts (I swear he probably craves for one on a daily basis) — and that’s how I checked out the third iteration of Tarte by Cheryl Koh that now occupies an even larger dine-in space at the second floor of Shaw Centre.

If I left my friend to order whatever he fancies, this would be the exact tart that he would order (because he orders only what he likes 🤣) — one may argue about the simplicity of the fruit tart over their other more intricate creations; the Caramel Cashew Tart being one great example where more is being done in terms of execution and visual appeal, but it is also how this simplicity is being so well-executed here that draws most here. The Strawberry Tart defines finesse here — the strawberries used here are not too tart; just carries the right level of zing, all that whilst being fresh so it’s a joy that they are very generous with them here at Tarte by Cheryl Koh so that each morsel of the tart can be enjoyed with a bit of that premium strawberry that they use. If anything, the pastry cream beneath also comes well-executed — carrying a light hint of vanilla fragrance (yes, you can see speckles of the vanilla beans here), the cream is also pretty smooth yet luscious; a consistent texture without being overly dense or sinful, but yet binds the crust and the fruits so well. Then, there is the stellar crust at the bottom — shattering neatly as one attempts to break it with a fork, the crust never turns into a crumbly mess; holds up the heft of whatever that is above well whilst being almost cookie-like.

Tarte by Cheryl Koh has come a long way; lesser of a focus under the Les Amis Group when they had first started out being a takeaway space at Bar au Vin (dine-in also allowed in the bar), to its subsequent expansion to a proper space around sister brands Lemak Boys, Tenjin, Lino Pasta & Pizza Bar and Jinjo, to its current space just in front of the escalator at level two or as Shaw Centre, Tarte by Cheryl Koh has come a long way, and an established name for premium tarts in Singapore. There’s no doubt that Tarte by Cheryl Koh had also since garnered a following — be it simple fruit tarts focusing on the freshness and quality of the produce that they source, when it comes to the execution of local flavours such as the Pandan Coconut Tart and Milo Coffee Tart, or the sexier Caramel Cashew Tart that showcases their skill and execution; and its this consistency that probably brought them this far, which is why us, as consumers of this day and age, are a lucky bunch indeed.

(Hosted Preview) Everyone who’s tasted this seasonal fruit will vouch for its extreme fragrance, sweetness, juiciness and superb firm-to-the-bite texture.
And in the hands of award-winning Pastry Chef Cheryl Koh (@tartebycherylkoh) and her team including Chef @kellycheah, it’s a win-win situation. They have unleashed their creativity in a fine display for the limited edition Afternoon Tea Set ($60 per pax) which sets the stage for the magnificence of the Jukhyang and MerryQueen, both Korean Strawberries so fabulous in their own way, to shine.
The set menu will be available daily at 3pm for one month, beginning on Monday, the 15th of March 2021. I would definitely recommend calling ahead to make a reservation because based on the number of people that slid into my DMs, many are very excited to try it.
To pair with the food, the team has concocted a selection of delicious drinks featuring Korean Strawberries as well. You do however, have the option of tea or coffee if that’s preferred.
What’s more, during this period, you can even purchase the fruit right there at the shop. How convenient for those who can’t get enough of the fruit and wish to continue indulging at home.

Thank you very much @brandfit for inviting us to the preview. And congratulations again Chef Cheryl on your new location. Love how gorgeous and comfortable the huge space is.

Here's my 2 cents worth. The caramel cashew which has single cashew atop that pale purple looking dome is really nice. I taste some salt crystals which makes contrast between the sweetness really amazing. It's a complex and yummy dessert. The kids love it and the adult love it so get it. I think the strawberry tart is simply average. It's not bad but not great. The tart which seem to contain a mountain of nuts is the Hazelnut tart. They are pretty generous with the hazelnut. The bottom contains a crispy chocolate like base. It's also nice on its own. But somehow I feel that the top and the bottoms seem like separate entities. There is not blending nor contrast. Like a pair of travellers who happen to be in the same bus. Overall these tarts are expensive, I will only go for the hazelnut cashew. That purple dome looking tart.
