Thai Wanton Mee ($4) Fried Wantons ($3). The mee was tossed in pork lard and fish sauce which explained why it was so fragrant. The char siew seemed to be fattier at Thai Ruk Thai which had a higher fat to lean meat ratio. The fried wantons were really crispy and packed with a substantial amount of pork filling too.

Another Thai wanton mee stall hits Ang Mo Kio! I like the springiness of the noodles, but they're unfortunately a little bland and lacking in lard fragrance. The wantons are crispy but small and mild-tasting. The char siew is pretty good though - it has a sweet exterior and a tender bite. Overall, this stall can afford to produce wanton mee with punchier flavours, so I'd say that Soi 19's still fared better.

From Thai Ruk Thai, a new stall situated in a coffeeshop at Blk 347 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, which also serves Pig Trotters Rice.

Quite a good bowl of Thai Wanton Mee here; springy noodles laced in a light-tasting savoury sauce which makes it distinctively Thai, while coming with tender yet aptly sweet Char Siew and well-filled wantons. Both fried and soup wantons were good; the former all crisp, while both both carrying a meaty bite. Sprinkle some of that chili flakes on the side at the stall for a spicy kick. This is the smallest portion size available at $4, but those with larger appetites can get more with the $5 and $6 options here; pretty much a hidden find that is not too far away from AMK Hub.

TRT is a relative newbie in the local Thai noodles market - an endeavour made all the more daunting by the fact that it operates on the AMK turf shared by at least two other Thai wanton noodles stalls, including the formidable Soi 19 juggernaut. The affable head honcho of this joint is one of the original trio behind Fatty Thai - but he left it for what we imagine to be an immensely lonely yet enriching journey of striking out on his own.

For a measure of how much we enjoyed it, we had it twice in the span of a week. The noodles were fantastic: Akaline egg noodles tossed in (presumably) pork lard oil for that subtle sinful fragrance, without the overbearing greasiness and saltiness we encountered at KinMoo. The char siew were frankly a pleasant surprise. They had a superb fat-to-meat ratio which could embarrass the neighbouring roast stall, and were slightly charred around the edges for that additional smokey, Kay Lee-esque flourish.
