Pretty unexpected find, if not for my failed impromptu attempt to head to Hainanese Village Food Centre for Da Zhong Cafe's kaya toast and kopi (the entire market is closed for cleaning I suppose). Just a small takeaway bakery, they offer quite a variety of butter cakes in both whole and sliced; the sliced ones are retailed at $1.50 each and comes in a myriad of uncommon flavours (e.g. Lemongrass, Cempedak, Rum &a Raisin) apart from the more expected Vanilla, Marble and even Orange.
Was expecting a strong punch of cempedak sweetness here but it's pretty mellow here; in fact it's more like a usual butter cake after a few bites — but a pretty good one while at it; you know those crumbly neighbourhood bakery ones which whiffs of intense buttery flavour? This was exactly it; totally reminds me of my childhood. To their credit though, I did manage to get a chunk of cempedak within to bite which enhances the sweetness just by a bit. Let's put it this way; it's going to be a hard time deciding to stop over Molly's for nyonya kueh or The Buttercake Shop for these next time when I head over to Hainanese Village Food Centre again. Heck, maybe I will go for both!
