I know this place is popular for their makis and sashimi so I wanted to order the Salmon Ikura Don when i arrived for Friday dinner. Alas, it was sold out. At 730 pm. On a friday night. Shows you how good business is! So i settled for their unagi don which was also super good. Very generous portions and a thick slab of well grilled unagi. Perhaps not as good as Man Man or Uya but certainly good enough for my friday dinner!

The warmth that exudes from the first bite is like a blanket to your soul, subtly hinting to you that everything will be alright.

Till date, the best Ebi Fry Maki is still at @theflyingsquirrelsg . Right ratios of rice to filling, prawn deep-fried just right and allowed to rest a little before it gets enveloped. The first bite (tail end) produces so many different flavours and texture, the crunch, so comforting the sound as it crackle with every bite; it’s soul food. It’s something I have had since TFS opened all those years ago and I don’t think I will ever stop ordering my soul food. .
@theflyingsquirrelsg is the brainchild of @chiefsquirrel , @hoseejack and @rai.kannu and bangs out quality Japanese and fusion Japanese food in a casual and intimate space at 92, Amoy Street. It’s my go-to for Japanese and when I want to be myself. You’ll fall in love with the place, the food and the hospitality.

Boasting a cozy interior, it is a perfect place to catch up over a plethora of Japanese dishes which you can pick from their lunch sets.

The Unagi Don ($20) called out to me, and I was soon found hungrily digging into my bowl. Nestled on top of a bed of pearly white Japanese rice, delicate slices of unagi were nicely grilled and slathered in a caramelised sauce. The freshness of the unagi was undeniable, and each bite complemented well with the fluffy Japanese style egg omelette mixed with mushrooms. Polished every single grain off the bowl and was still craving for more at the end even though I was full from the side serving of salad and miso soup 😋🐽

Bara Chirashi it is for lunch. Only gripe, not much greens, unlike a salad lunch. Still this was yummy.

Excellent restaurant, great ambience and wonderful ingredients served up by non-intrusive helpful staff. Went off piste a little with the Chicken Karaage wasabi taco (pictured). Was tempted by the intriguing mix of flavours. Not exactly what I expected though; tasted fine but karaage was chopped and the crunch disappeared with it (though the taco itself was crunchy). Other dishes absolutely great.

No idea what flying and squirrels have to do with Japanese food but this was some pretty legit Japanese fare. Fresh, funky and creative. Unlike the usual makis, each piece is different making for a much more fun experience. Will definitely recommend getting this at TFS.
