A plate of really affordable and decent hor fun from the chicken rice stall (Yummy Chicken is the stall name if I’m not wrong)!!! Sauce is a mix of sweet and salty, but not overpowering. Hor fun has a good texture to it. Portion is huge considering that this is only.. $2.60. You can pair the hor fun with either lemon chicken, steamed/roasted chicken or even wanton!

The Noodles stall usually has one of the longest queues. I don’t think this dish is on the menu, but everyone knows about it. Just tell the uncle or aunty “can can” (“mix mix” in Chinese) and you get a mix of all the ingredients – mushrooms, minced pork, fishballs, fishcake, ngoh hiang, shredded chicken, beansprouts, green vegetables, spring onions, wanton, shui jiao, and your choice of noodles, the default being a nice springy mee kia. And all for the price of $2.30! You just don’t get this type of value for money anywhere else. I had the soup form, but the dry form is good too.

Recently obsessed with the bibimbap from the korean store HAHA maybe its because of its affordability? The lady is sometimes generous with the vegetables which i appreciate 😭 the option of changing to brown rice makes everything better! Their bibimbap sauce not the most flavorful tho

From the Korean food stall:

Haven’t ordered bibimbap for a long while, but I’m under the distinct impression that they now provide a lot more meat than they used to (it’s hidden under the egg). The version here comes with white rice, julienned cucumbers, carrots, mushrooms, bean sprouts (not the fat Korean kind), bulgogi chicken/beef/pork, gochujang sauce and the regular banchan of anchovies and kimchi.

It’s a simple but healthy and satisfying lunch option. There was a little too much rice to ingredient and sauce ratio for me, plus I would’ve liked more heat in the sauce, but I can’t fault this for convenient and affordable campus food. Also, even though I took out some white rice, I was still super full! It is a little hard to mix everything together with the sauce in the rectangular takeaway container, but I would definitely order this again especially since the Korean stall queue is consistently one of the fastest-moving during lunch time.

Disclaimer: this zhang isn’t made by the vegetarian stall, they purchased it from a supplier for dumpling festival and is just a seasonal item. Despite that, the pretty blue butterfly pea-coloured glutinous rice deserves a mention. The contrast of white and blue is really pretty, and the taste of the zhang is good too! The filling is fibrous and has a legitimate meat-like texture, which is enough to fool you into thinking that this is real meat and not a vegetarian zhang. It’s well-seasoned, and you can actually enjoy the rice or the fillings on their own, or together. Overall a surprise quality find in NUS Science Canteen, wish we’d known earlier so I could’ve bought some home as well.

For a quick fix while on campus, the MLXG stall in Frontier canteen is decent. Selection of ingredients is not too bad, there’s quite a lot of vegetables and enough meat choices. What I love the most is that there’s cheese tofu available as I don’t see it offered in many stalls. We ordered this bowl for two which came up to $17.70, and decided to go for medium spicy this time. They work via a buzzer system so you can just come back and collect when it’s ready.

I personally felt the medium spicy here wasn’t actually spicy. More of a 小小辣, but perhaps that’s to prevent the students or staff from having gastrointestinal issues. There’s not much numbingness either, which corroborates with the lack of peppercorns in the bowl. My dining partner enjoyed the bamboo shoots in particular, and I did find that they were fresh and crunchy.

An extra point to note is that the staff are friendly - the cashier asked if I wanted two bowls of green bean soup for free and I said yes for sure. I felt that the soup tasted quite bland, but the texture was on point as it had been boiled for a long time and the beans were soft. Kudos for free stuff though - great way to end off a MLXG meal with some cooling dessert.
