In 2014, Aussie Chef Darren Farr started The Lokal, a Modern Australian Restaurant-Bar, providing all our customers with homemade comfort food — including butter, sauces, pickles and meats all made on site. Our name is German for local, an influence that be explained by its proximity to Goethe-Institut Singapore and is also reflective of our diverse and worldly approach towards food that can be enjoyed by the people in Singapore.  In the day, he serves up healthy and hearty brunches like Smashed Avocado with Ricotta, Roasted Pumpkin Salad, and Steak & Eggs, but slowly transits into a cozy and versatile space for intimate dinners & casual cocktails sessions with comfort food by German Head Chef Max Strauch such as Tasmanian Grass Fed Steak Frites, Catch of the Day and Grilled Pork Chops. Aside from the normal menus, both Chef Darren & Max also prepare Daily Specials with fresh seasonal produces for Brunch & Dinner, like Victorian Truffles & White Asparagus.

This Aussie inspired cafe is one of the few places where the food actually speaks for itself. Love the option to pimp my breakfast! 😊

On my plate:
1) gluten free sourdough [$3]
2) wilted spinach [$5]
3) poached eggs [$6]
4) sautéed potatoes [$5]
5) house smoked ocean trout [$8]

The house smoked ocean trout is a must order!! Smoked to perception with the right consistency and texture. Definitely a far cry from the store bought ones. Particularly also enjoyed the gluten free toasts, which were more dense than the rye, pumpernickel and sourdough.

Super extensive list of items to choose from, pimping my breakfast at The Lokal never fails to start my day on a good note. I truly adore this place for taking pride in what they serve, making many items from scratch like yoghurt, baked beans, ricotta, kimchi, kaya, peanut butter and even ketchup and chili sauce! Lots of love and effort put into every item listed on the menu 😊

What is interesting is the more unconventional options available for the pimp list: Housemade kimchi [$6], burger patty [$8], cauliflower and cheese [$6] and many more. Something more indulgent would be the Grilled slipper lobster tails [$12]

On my plate:
Toasted Rye [$2]
Scrambled eggs [$6]
Carrot pumpkin seed hummus [$6]
Roast chicken [$6]

Everything was delicious on my plate. Especially enjoyed the perfectly scrambled eggs with their housemade ketchup. The hummus was not what I expected as the taste of chick peas was rather mild, plus it was more on the sweet side. Texture wise, it was more mushy than gritty/paste-y (which I prefer). Roast chicken was nicely shredded and seasoned. Overall, full and satisfied!


Ideal for those who wish to avoid the post-lunch afternoon slump, the Grain Bowl ($18) is one of the healthiest and most filling options on The Lokal's newly revamped menu.

Ever since the inception of grain bowls in the local food scene, aesthetic presentation seems to have taken precedence over taste and quality of ingredients.

That doesn't seem to be the case here, with a base of black barley, farro, and quinoa, as well as a colourful assortment of cooked, pickled and raw vegetables, and a 64° egg in mirin-soy dressing - fresh, unpretentious ingredients that all scream "health!!!!!"

You get a choice of house-smoked ocean trout (my pick - it's a much better & cleaner-tasting complement) or pork belly. Of course, a vegetarian and gluten-free option is also available.
