The Lokal

3201 Wishlisted
In 2014, Aussie Chef Darren Farr started The Lokal, a Modern Australian Restaurant-Bar, providing all our customers with homemade comfort food — including butter, sauces, pickles and meats all made on site. Our name is German for local, an influence that be explained by its proximity to Goethe-Institut Singapore and is also reflective of our diverse and worldly approach towards food that can be enjoyed by the people in Singapore.  In the day, he serves up healthy and hearty brunches like Smashed Avocado with Ricotta, Roasted Pumpkin Salad, and Steak & Eggs, but slowly transits into a cozy and versatile space for intimate dinners & casual cocktails sessions with comfort food by German Head Chef Max Strauch such as Tasmanian Grass Fed Steak Frites, Catch of the Day and Grilled Pork Chops. Aside from the normal menus, both Chef Darren & Max also prepare Daily Specials with fresh seasonal produces for Brunch & Dinner, like Victorian Truffles & White Asparagus.

Ordered this for delivery during the Circuit Breaker and it was wonderful, BUT nothing beats having @thelokalsingapore’s housemade Banana Bread right on their premises.
Served warm, it comes in a generous big block and is lavished in caramelised bananas and yogurt (both made from scratch in-house too). Then, on go toasted macadamia nuts and for the finishing touch, grated lime zest. So in every bite there’s fragrance, warmth, sweetness, mushiness, buttery crunch and a teensy bright note of citrus freshness. I still think it’s extraordinarily yums, like it‘s always been from my first taste of it a couple of years ago.

Chef-owner Darren (@fuzzychef) shared with me when I dropped by last night that @thelokalsingapore is now open from Wednesdays to Sundays and serves their Brunch Menu from 9am to 9pm. That’s not to say they have stopped their Dinner Menu because it’s available in the evening but if you get a craving for Bacon & Eggs for dinner, or feel like doing things your way via their “Pimp My Breakfast” option (there are 15 items to choose from), you now know where to go. I actually really like the sound of that and plan to check it out soon.

Banana bread, caramelised bananas, macadamia nuts and housemade vanilla yogurt.

I used to loveeee this. I don’t think the taste has changed but maybe mine has. The banana bread goes well with the yogurt and butterscotch-like sauce. It taste good when you get all the components together in every bite, with the nuts providing a nice crunch.

However, I would not say the banana bread itself is a good one. On its own it’s actually quite bland and not banana-ey enough. But the dish as a whole works and it’s a good dish. I just don’t see myself paying $17.65 nett for it again. I’d rather get their sticky date pudding.

This cute stack ($17) normally comes with a blueberry compote but they didn't have any so I requested a change to their house made vanilla yogurt, which was a bit more watery than I imagined but still really nice and tangy.

Gotta be real, I was really hoping for a fluffy, thick, pillowy pancake but these weren't that at all...? Their thinness aside (I usually have my pancakes super thick and fluffy), they're kind of stiff and dry. The maple syrup helped a little bit. I really liked the house made butter though. So super creamy and elevated the pancakes along with the maple syrup.

Love that it was served with a huge round ice cube that kept the coffee cold, without diluting it as much. This cold brew was made from beans roasted by Paradise Coffee Roaster. Not as creamy and chocolatey wish I prefer as this was more light and a little more acidic.

Very nice cafe to study at!!! - spacious and comfortable and the staff are super friendly!!!! :”) But perhaps I couldnt appreciate the roast pork sandwich (the cabbage 😢) but the pork was nicely roasted with a charred aroma!! Friend ordered BLT sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it! (Chai latte was a miss tho)

An alright cuppa, too milky and not spicey enough but I liked that it wasn't sweet.
