In 2014, Aussie Chef Darren Farr started The Lokal, a Modern Australian Restaurant-Bar, providing all our customers with homemade comfort food — including butter, sauces, pickles and meats all made on site. Our name is German for local, an influence that be explained by its proximity to Goethe-Institut Singapore and is also reflective of our diverse and worldly approach towards food that can be enjoyed by the people in Singapore.  In the day, he serves up healthy and hearty brunches like Smashed Avocado with Ricotta, Roasted Pumpkin Salad, and Steak & Eggs, but slowly transits into a cozy and versatile space for intimate dinners & casual cocktails sessions with comfort food by German Head Chef Max Strauch such as Tasmanian Grass Fed Steak Frites, Catch of the Day and Grilled Pork Chops. Aside from the normal menus, both Chef Darren & Max also prepare Daily Specials with fresh seasonal produces for Brunch & Dinner, like Victorian Truffles & White Asparagus.

So happy to be back here for a casual Friday dinner. I ordered the spicy chicken soba noodle salad.

The first thing I notice is how flavourful it is. Like the spice and acidity of the sriracha-lime dressing coating a generous amount of perfectly cooked soba noodles and crunchy cabbage. And I normally don’t like raw ginger or parsley, but the spices really intermingled for an exotic, Asiatic flavor. The chicken was tender and really delicious.

And the textures! The crunchy roasted peanuts and refreshing cucumber! The noodles are al dente and in such a generous portion too.

Definitely a really well-executed, delicious salad that tasted good and made me feel good as well.

The cold brew white was very smooth and not too overwhelmingly sweet or milky. It was perfect on the rocks. I liked the tinge of vanilla.

Overall a great accompaniment to our savoury brunch dishes.

This was a lovely way to end our meal. The banana bread was warm and moist, paired excellently with the crunchy macadamia nuts and caramelised banana slices. Perfect for the sweet tooth’s out there.

A pricey dessert, but worth a try at least once - you’re really paying for the quality.

I loved the contrast between the smooth creaminess of the avocado, and the sharpness of the ricotta. It was a delicious piece of toast - however rather small for the price, though to be fair they were generous with the ingredients - and the ingredients were all very fresh.

If you don’t mind paying for quality over quantity, and aren’t too hungry, this dish is definitely worth a try.

One of my favorite cold brews and it is made to order (not pre-bottled)! So can BYO next time. The milk can also be customised. I personally find it a bit different than their in-house espresso-based drink, the cold brew is bolder and more chocolate-y (which I love).
