Love the food at The Populus cafe and it’s evident how many other people love them as well. It’s packed on weekends, so make sure to make a reservation before heading down or you be in for quite a wait. They have an extensive All Day Breakfast and Grain Bowl menu, as well as amazingly crispy waffles that you can top up for (~20 min waiting time) when you order their sundaes. The Populus is my favourite place for waffles, as their texture ticks all my boxes. The drink menu here covers both caffeine addicts and non-coffee drinkers as they serve up Mork hot chocolate imported from Melbourne, as well as non-coffee lattes. They brew great coffee here as well, with some beautiful latte art that warrants ordering the hot drinks for.

Recommendations:
- The Populus Scramble (I personally it prefer it without the deluxe option of lobster bisque and crabmeat)
- Bounty of the Sea Grain Bowl (for seafood lovers)
- The “Chicken Rice” Don
- Jamaican Rum Bananas Sundae with Waffles
- Hot Latte (or any hot milk coffee based drinks for the latte art!)

The Populus’s take on chicken rice comes with a fried chicken cutlet, an onsen egg, pickled cucumber, purple cabbage, carrots, and ginger, with some mayo on top of a bed of Japanese white rice. The fried chicken is stellar, and luckily there’s an option to add on more fried chicken to your bowl if you want! We did not break the egg yolk to mix into the bowl this time but the rice was not dry thanks to the addition to mayonnaise. The pickled vegetables were great as well, as they remained crunchy, and weren’t too sour. Even though I’m not a fan of pickled ginger, the version here is quite good as the flavour is milder than other places, it’s not too sharp and certainly does not overpower the other ingredients. While this certainly isn’t the local chicken rice that we know, it’s a fantastic rice bowl combination and I would totally order this again and even consider adding on more fried chicken!

You had me at seahorse latte art.

How beautiful is this cuppa? The seahorse even has a tiny eye dot - talk about attention to detail! I have such a soft spot for latte art that when I saw this I loved the coffee at The Populus already without taking a sip. Fortunately, the coffee didn’t disappoint. It’s smooth, and the blend is nutty with a fragrant roast aroma.
