From the Burpple community

We were pretty impressed by the chicken rice donburi during one of our previous visits to Populus and we decided that we had to get another donburi today! Today, we got the relatively-healthier Bounty of the Sea Donburi, which comes with a piece of roasted cod, around 4 pieces of Japanese scallops, crab meat and all these ingredients are served atop a bowl of brown rice!

The scallops were great and they were much larger and juicier than we expected! However, we felt that the cod fillet might have been a little overcooked as the meat in the cod was a little tougher than we expected as well. Crab meat was also decent and the portion size was rather generous! We also liked that the pickled cucumber and red cabbage, together with the brown rice, gave the dish a really healthy feel! ๐Ÿ˜‹

Price-wise, the dish costs $23++, which is in line with the prices of their other Donburi rice bowls! However, you can pay an additional $13++ to add an Aburi lobster tail and based on what we have seen from pictures online, it looks great!

We also got a cup of white coffee to go with our meal and it was great to have coffee with milk going with our burger, as it might be a little strange to pair the sourish profile of a long black with burger and fries. The 8 ounce cup costs $6++ and it was much bigger than expected, so we think the drink was pretty worth it! ๐Ÿ˜

After being thoroughly impressed by the chicken in Populus' chicken rice donburi bowl previously, we decided to try out another of their fried chicken dishes: the Populus Fried Chicken Burger! The fried chicken was great as expected - not overly oily and retaining a generous crunch to it and most importantly, it was as large as the burger itself! ๐Ÿ˜ The burger also came with a strip of crispy bacon, which made for a decadent burger lunch! The burger bread was buttered as well, which made it less plain than the burgers in most restaurants.

We paid an additional $3++ to upgrade the fries to truffle shoestring fries, and we were honestly surprised by the large serving of fries! The truffle fragrance was very obvious and the fries were coated in a generous serving of parmesan cheese as well! $21++ for this dish is a pretty reasonable price and is sure to be enough to fill your tummy, so do give it a go if you are not afraid of oil! ๐Ÿ˜

One of the food which still tasted good even though its via delivery! Kudos to the deliveryman & the populas team!

We decided to get something different at Populus today and we thought of trying the Truffle Wagyu Beef rice bowl! Our first thought when the dish came was - it looks so healthy! Indeed, this is arguably one of the healthiest items on the menu, and the dish did not feel greasy at all! The mainstay of the dish would be the seared slices of beef, and it was accompanied by purple cabbage, ginger, finely-sliced cucumber and a ramen egg! The beef was prepared pretty well and it was not overcooked although we felt that the meat was a little too lean.

However, we felt that the dish was a little too tasteless, because even though it was topped with onion and apple sauce, the amount of sauce was pretty little and it was distributed quite unevenly. Hence, for the most part of the dish, there wasn't much taste to it. Perhaps we should have mixed the dish before starting our meal, instead of trying to maintain the arrangement of the stuff in the bowl as we eat? ๐Ÿ˜

At $24++, it was a pretty standard price for a beef bowl. However, do note that Populus is pretty popular so you should probably make a reservation before dining here!

Populus serves it's signature cold white coffee in what looks like a beer bottle and it was really good! The drink was really creamy and the taste of coffee was pretty light, so it ended up tasting like a slightly sweet drink to go with your meal. While the cafe serves the drink together with a cup, we would advise you not to pour the coffee into the cup until you are about to drink it, as the drink becomes dilute really quickly!

Do give it a try as this is one-of-a-kind, even though it's price is slightly steep at $8++! You can also buy the drink as a takeaway, but you may wish to note that no preservatives are added to the drink and you should refrigerate it as soon as possible, and finish it within a week!
