Hadn’t really visited The Rice Bowl at Sim Lim Square for quite a while — a lesser used option for lunch around the office these days somehow, but kinda disappointed how the Cereal Chicken Rice didn’t really age well after a change of ownership.

Prior to the revamp of the space into the brightly coloured establishment that it is now and when wok-fried rice dishes are served on ordinary plates than in a mini-wok atop a basket, the Cereal Chicken Rice is one of my favourite dishes to order here — generous sprinklings of crisp cereal flakes that is buttery and sweet that has been wok-fried with the chicken chunks; came with crisp wok-fried curry leaves and chili padi for a slight heat to tingle the taste buds. The Cereal Chicken Rice now comes with fried bits of egg white; not a bad addition though these are a little difficult to nail down well with their tendency to soak up grease and turn soggy after being left there for a while, not to mention the reduction of the portion of wok-fried cereal to just mere clumps of over-fried, sugary clumps of crunch that felt not only odd, but barely integrated with the entire dish. Thankfully the curry leaves and chili padi still pretty much retained the texture and flavours that it was supposed to, while the sunny side-up was a little inconsistent with another order coming with a runny yolk, though this one came with a fully-cooked yolk. That being said, it’s of a very different breed from the Cereal Chicken Rice that I was used to having here — not really something I would settle for gastronomic value.

came here on a whim after my friend suggested this place; who can pass up on anything salted egg yolk right? was floored by the huge portion of fried chicken coated with the salted egg yolk sauce, atop rice and a runny egg 😛 loved how generous they were with the sauce too! the service was great, our group got free drinks, and the owners are really friendly :-) would return again in a heartbeat. 10/10 recommend!

Signature Salted Egg Chicken - The Rice Bowl process and prepare real salted eggs instead of ordering wholesale from a supplier.

From The Rice Table at Sim Lim Square, which had recently went through a revamp with a new management.

Thought their Cereal Chicken Rice does not taste much of the same as before, but the Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Rice does make for a decent alternative for the crowded Taste Good just a few doors away. Tossed in salted egg yolk sauce, the chunks of chicken were well-sized with enough bite while the salted egg sauce was not too overwhelming, just saltish enough without being too rich or sweet. Curry leaves are added for a bit of crispness and aroma, but thought there could be more chili padi for more flavour. Sunny side-up lacks the ooziness of a liquid yolk however, being fully-cooked within. Overall, a Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Rice dish that is of a respectable grade that makes for a decent dining choice here even despite having more well-known neighbours around them.

Wasn't expecting much from this but boy was I surprised! Generous serving of chicken, well-coated with salted egg without being too overpowering, and so reasonably priced. My new go-to if I'm in the Sim Lim / Rochor area. Try it if you're around the area!

From The Rice Bowl; the Chinese economy stall that also sells tzechar items just beside Roast Master and two doors away from Taste Good (aka the more famous Salted Egg Chicken Rice in Sim Lim Square).

I liked the version at Taste Good, but I found the variant at The Rice Bowl even more appealing — a good balance of sweet and savoury; saucy but not overly creamy (it maintains a gritty texture of mashed salted egg yolk) while carrying a good amount of chili powder for that occasional spiciness when one chews on them. They seem to be generous with the fried chicken chunks; crisp and served piping hot, along with warm rice and a good amount of sauce. Quite value for money now given their current promotion at $4.50; a dollar off the usual $5.50 that is listed on the menu board. Worth going for!
