海南寶 Paying tribute to the Hainanese who arrived on Singapore’s shores after the British, The Hainan Story by Baoshi is one of the biggest congregations of Hainanese cuisine in one place. The 5-in-1 multi-brand Hainanese restaurant celebrates the best of Hainanese cuisine by bringing together new and old brands that Singaporeans are familiar with. The Hainan Story’s menu features the works of Hainanese chefs, Baoshi’s in-house culinary team and young chefs – a traditional yet modern affair. A must-try is their ‘Newspaper Hainanese Curry Rice’, which treasured recipe is imparted by an elderly Hainanese lady. Bold with flavours, the curry rice has 6 different sets to choose from. Other signatures include Hainanese delicacies such as claypot and noodle varieties by ‘The Hainan Story’, British-Hainanese western fare from ‘Uncle Robert Western’, as well as iconic dishes from famous brands such as ‘Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice’ and ‘Ah Chiang’s Traditional Porridge’.

Had the Golden Prawn Fritter Rice Set ($10.80) and the Steamed Chicken w Vegetable Set ($14.50). Overall enjoyed both but nothing outstanding. Could find similar quality at a cheaper price.

Pretty interesting Gula Melaka Kaya Butter Toast! The spread was very unique and love the fluffliness of the bread. Teh was not too milky which was good!

Extra crispy, golden-brown pork cutlet topped with sweet onions, cubed potatoes and served with tangy tomato-based sauce is damn good and makes me very happy!

All the popular toasts, classic buns, swiss rolls and butter cakes, that are handmade daily, will now be made available at The Hainan Story Bakery. What’s more, you can also look forward to more British-Hainanese pastries, sourdough bombs and sourdough pizza at the bakery.

To celebrate the opening of the bakery, there will be store-exclusive items such as the four new Mini Swiss Rolls ($2.50 each) that include flavours such as Teh Susu, Red Velvet, Ondeh Ondeh and Oreo, which are great as a gift for friends or for pampering oneself. Additionally, there is the Hainanese Curry Chicken Sourdough Bread Bomb ($19.80), which is a great party snack that you can tear apart the bread bowl to dip through the curry chicken and sauce. For bun lovers, do not miss out on the classics such as the Hainanese Classic Curry Chicken Polo Bun ($3.80) that contains juicy chunks of boneless curried chicken within, Bak Kwa Pork Floss Bun ($3.80), Uncle Otah Bun ($2.80) and Bacon & Cheese Bun ($2.80).

This is the first Hainan Story location. It is a food court which sells only Hainanaese food such as the ever popular chicken rice by Wee Nam Kee, claypot Yee Mee, etc. But I came for coffee and their Hainanese Kueh - Yi Bua. This used to be something only available during special days of celebration and remembrance. At least that’s what I experienced as a kid.

Made with glutinous rice flour, the Yi Bua here comes with coconut filling and coconut/peanut filling. Both are sweet, with the latter a little savoury. It complements the glutinous rice pastry skin well. Coupled with a cup of Hainanese coffee and soft boiled eggs, maybe a Kaya toast, it becomes a perfect way to start your day.

Next time I’ll come try the rest of the menu. Hainanese must support Hainanese, my father used to say.
