Tiong Bahru Galicier will never fail to pop up if you are hunting for traditional nyonya kuehs. But due to its popularity, it can be difficult to catch specific kuehs, like this one that I have been missing out for a long time. Set on a moist, fluffy Pandan sponge base, the Putu Ayu appeared dense but sank in nicely with a good balance of airiness. There are 2 flavours on top; half with gula melaka that’s was stronger in flavour than the other half with white desiccated coconut. Personally preferred the gula melaka for the sweeter kick and the white desiccated coconut seemed more suitable for their kueh dardar.

🍴Have always only gone for their Kueh dar dar and putu ayu but decided to try their #fattgou (huat Kueh)after seeing another review that these aesthetic and cute kuehs had fillings inside. Maybe we had too high expectations as we were disappointed by the minimal amount of fillings, especially in the yam & pandan versions, and would have preferred if there was more to enhance the flavour profile. While the fillings (green - pandan, purple - yam, pink - strawberry) were tasty, the kueh itself lacked flavour. We also found the strawberry one to taste more artificial & sweet. Texture-wise, they were soft but slightly dense, and we would have preferred if they were more airy. Would probably still stick to their putu ayu, ondeh ondeh, and Kueh dardar in the future 😅

Moist white desiccated coconut (without gula melaka) wrapped with soft panda crepe.

I like that it is not too sweet and you can really taste the coconut. I also enjoy that the skin is really soft. The best kueh dardar I’ve had.

However, I find the rest of their kuehs are just meh i.e. kueh kosui, bingka ubi, kueh ambon.

I have previously reviewed about other traditional kuehs here, but it’s the first for their ondeh-ondeh. You might find it a little pricey for a small ondeh-ondea ball, but trust me, the quality justifies for its price.

It’s one of the few with a thin chewy kueh skin, that’s hardly found. Usually the factory made ones have thick kueh skin with little filling. I was taken aback by the mini ‘explosion’ that I had in my mouth upon the first bite, as the sweet brown gula melaka started flowing out. Everything complemented nicely, with the grated coconut. You will also find a literally sweet surprise after the gula melaka, as they also incorporated a small block of brown sugar in the filling which you can bite into.

I revisited this particular kueh on a friend's recommendation. I liked it the first time, it certainly continued to be good, although it left me a slight feeling it could be better.
