This item from Jian Bo (5 for $2.50) has been a staple for many years - love how the steamed cake is soft but not mushy as well as the savoury cai poh mixed with shallots and hei bi. Plus points for the fragrant chilli and use of less oil!

A value for money bowl for what it’s served with! $3 and you get fishcakes, 3 fishballs, pork slices and a fish dumpling. Soup was bland, but the noodles were springy and tossed in a nice ketchup-chilli mix. Their queue moves rather slowly, so you might not want to get this if you’re having a quick lunch.

Here at Tiong Bahru Food Centre (there are 2 famous stalls here). Lor Mee 178’s signature Lor Mee ($3.00) is a bowl of thick, flat yellow noodles in viscous gravy (the lor). Unlike the ones in other Lor Mees, its flavourful gravy is not too starchy and has a good consistency to it. You could finish slurping a bowl without feeling too full.

Most people would add the crispy Shark Nuggets (not fins, don’t have to get overly triggered) for an additional dollar.
