Whenever we are stuck with a food decision around the area, we will always end up to a reliable destination, and that is Dee Tongue Thai, known for their no holds barred spicy flavours and aroma. This time round, other than the must-order Tom Yum Talay ($12/$15) that will make you shed some tears and irresistibly crispy Kai Jeow Moo ($10) or Thai Pork Omelette, we tried for the very first time, Dee Tongue Thai’s homemade red curry paste that is stir-fried with pork (Pad Prik Gaeng Moo $12), and it was oh-so-good. The sauce is so moreish that you will need a scoop of white rice to go with it.

🍴Dee Tongue Thai is as good as it gets for Thai street food in Singapore! Every dish we tried exemplified what is so addictive about Thai cuisine - the perfect harmony of sweet, sour, salty and spicy! The Thai papaya salad was strong on funk from the fermented shrimp and we gobbled it up within 5 mins! The spicy fried catfish was tossed with red curry paste, green peppercorns that we loved, and other fresh herbs and chillies. So spicy, fresh, and umami! We order the Tom yum every time and it is always great - more tangy and spicier than other versions outside, and brimming with loads of squid and prawns. The green curry and pad woon sen talay (fried vermicelli) were excellent renditions as well. Would also recommend getting their Thai milk tea that’s fragrant and not overly sweetened to help counter the spiciness.

That said, not all the dishes are rockstars. We were disappointed by their pad thai that had more of a sweet tomato-based sauce and pad see ew that was forgettable. We found both noodle dishes to be on the oilier side and lacking sourness.

Overall, prices were extremely reasonable given the portions and sheer amount of quality ingredients. We haven’t tried better Thai food at such a reasonable price point - have you?

In Singapore, we have access to Thai food in many different places such as hawker centres, food courts and restaurants but the one place that sort of guarantees that you are getting the legit stuff will be at Singapore’s “mini Thailand” that is Golden Mile Complex as there are numerous Thai food restaurants for you to choose from. One such place that I usually head to is Dee Tongue Thai and I am glad to see that the restaurant is doing well, from the dining crowd, after the easing of the dining-in measures. Back to Dee Tongue after so long, and the must-orders are the Moo Tod Kra Tiem ($12), a deep fried pork dish with garlic and pepper and the quintessential Tom Yum Talay ($12), a fiery hotpot with seafood such as prawns and squids, and mushrooms added into it. Be prepared for a spicy kick as the tom yum soup will leave a burning sensation on your palate, but in a very shiok feeling. When you are here, do try out their other dishes too as they have an extensive menu of stir fry, rice/noodles, curry, salad and many other items for your Thai food cravings.

When I visit any Thai restaurant for the first time, kor moo yang (Thai grilled pork) is always a must-order. The one at Dee Tongue Thai ($12), which I presume is pork neck, is very good. The meat is nicely browned with just the slightest hint of char, and tender to the bite. But it's the accompanying chilli sauce that really makes this dish – smoky and subtly sweet from palm sugar and tamarind!

These are seriously stinky beans right here, but in a good way. With a raw funk that will put off many but has me hooked, they're stir-fried in a moderately spicy and sweet chilli sauce with chillis, onions and juicy prawns. Slightly smoky and brimming with umami, I could eat this with only a plateful of plain rice and walk away a satisfied man.

Taste: 3.5/5
