More Reviews of good food at Tonkichi (Takashimaya)

($28) I did tried their hire & rosu katsu set on shaw centre outlet before but I didn't included on food reviews previously. But hire one still quite tender but slightly hard to chew thru whereas rosu still quite soft but quite easily to chew thru. So I decided to try cheese version instead. So it's quite milky, creamy and thick cheese sauce sandwiched with pork. But for me, its quite savoury, crunchy and chewy taste and texture so it's quite getting jelak for me towards the end.

($24) my sister ordered this but I did managed to try one piece for hire pork lol. But I felt that it's quite soggy tbh but overall hire was quite chewy and also not that hard in my opinion.

One of the first tonkatsu specialty restaurants in Singapore. Tonkichi serves anything cooked with Panko breadcrumbs since 1993.

My preference for tonkatsu is always rosu katsu (loin) as the meat’s juicier and fattier. The US kurobuta rosu katsu set came with rice, cabbage, pickles and miso soup. You’re also given a pestle to grind the toasted sesame seeds to be mixed with the sweet and sour tonkatsu sauce. Carb lovers would love the fact that the rice is free flow (as with most katsu places). We added on a bowl of curry ($5++) as I was craving for Japanese curry.

Opting for the premium option was certainly worth it as the meat was more tender with a larger proportion of the fat in this deep fried delight. The tonkatsu wasn’t too oily and the exterior was crispy. The curry was not too sweet and had the perfect blend of spices that’s perfect for non-spicy eaters. We loved the curry so much that we wanted a second helping.

Disappointing tonkatsu. Heard they’re good but nope, meat too hard to bite, service is slow and poor

The Kurobota tonkatsu is good, but if you crave tonkatsu, the best place is Tonkatsu by Ma Maison at Mandarin Gallery across the street (not to be confused with the Ma Maison outlet just opposite)! They have more choices, and the rice (choice of brown or white) and miso soup - both with unlimited refills along with the cabbage - are several levels better! The different promotions are kind of rearrangements of the same stuff, not much savings.

Fluffy white rice, crispy chicken katsu and flavourful curry makes for a comforting meal.

The pork loin was tender, and had a perfect amalgamation of juicy fats and lean meat. The breaded pork was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. The sweet tonkatsu sauce that was mixed with the sesame elevated the taste of the pork. Tip: its on offer with Groupon at only $16.90 per set (usual price $28.20)

My first visit to this establishment was years ago, and I’ve gone back many times since, and have recommended it to anyone who’s asked, “Where's a good tonkatsu place in Singapore?"

The menu has a variety of items, but the most popular are the set menus, featuring hire katsu (pork fillet) and rosu katsu (pork loin). Needless to say, they are my personal faves.

When it comes to the Tonkatsu here, there's something divinely satisfying about biting through the crisp and feathery light golden breading into the tender juicy pork while the sweet-tangy flavour of the Tonkatsu sauce swirled around in the mouth. Yum.

Not to mention the thinly shredded fresh, crunchy cabbage served with a citrusy dressing and spicy mustard, and the white pearly grains with great texture and beautiful luster.

🗒 Hire Katsu Set ($22.00), Rosu Katsu Set ($24.00)

At 10pm. Help.

Take me back to the long weekend when I could enjoy jap food over a lovely view of orchard road without having to worry about studying.

grinding and pounding of the sesame seeds was loud, then the cutting of the breaded pork loin was even louder. it was loudest when the crunchiest tonkatsu meets the juiciest free flow fresh cabbage. so rude but so goooood.

When I lunched at Tonkichi today, their monthly promotion item looked interesting enough for me to abandon my usual order.
The pork-based broth of medium spiciness was served on a mini stove, so it remained steaming hot throughout my meal. I had fun dipping the ramen in the broth before slurping it up (rather noisily - heehee!). The two slices of pork belly chashu were decent but I wish there was a whole egg, and not just half. A more runny yolk wouldn't have hurt either 😁

I guess Tonkatsu must be treating their staff well for them to stay that long! Awesome...!!
.
However I can’t say the same for their Katsu. Although it was deep fried till golden brown - I could taste and see the layer of undercooked batter between the meat and the fried outer crust. And the miso soup was - meh! I don’t remember if the set dinner still comes with fruits - cos they didn’t serve us - and we also forgot to ask for it. Oh well. Dinner was OK - but definitely not one for the better Katsu that I’ve had...and maybe that explains why we haven’t gone there for a long time.

😋 Tonkichi is well-known for its tonkatsu for its perfectly deep-fried pork cutlet with that melting fats after-taste. And this chilli crab sauce on egg has levelled up the game. However, it's currently only available through delivery channels: foodpandasg and @honestbeesg (coming soon to @ubereats_sg).
.
Check out their newly launched special delivery menu featuring spicy cheese katsu don (also in frame, $17), blackpepper katsu and so on. Comes with miso soup and priced from $17 onwards.

It comes with 7 nicely pressed sushi 🍣 and also choice of katsu (pork fillet, oyster or prawn). The sushi chef has already applied the right dab of wasabi between the fish and the rice for you 🍣 Do inform the server if you do not want any wasabi in your sushi. The oyster katsu is huge; delicious contrast of crispiness and succulence.
