True Blue Cuisine was opened in November 2003 in the heart of the Peranakan enclave - Katong. Since then, it has charmed visitors with its inviting decor and authentic Peranakan delicacies. More than just a restaurant, it also brings to life an all-round experience of the rich Peranakan culture. In 2008 True Blue Cuisine moved to its brand new premises in Armenian Street, just beside the Peranakan Museum, complimenting the museum and providing an even more complete feast for the senses.

Otak otak ($10)
Bakwan Kepiting ($10/ portion)
Ayam buah keluak ($26)
Rendang Sapi ($18)
Itek sio ($20)
Overall ⭐️ 4/5 ⭐️
This was Peranakan food at the highest standard! All the dishes we ordered were extremely flavourful yet distinct in their own ways. Our family’s favourites were the ayam buah keluak which had tender chicken thighs and huge buah keluaks swimming in a luscious, complex sauce that went perfectly with rice; the itek sio (duck braised in sweet coriander sauce) that was thick with a medley of umami, sweet, and spicy notes; and the otak otak (spicy fish paste wrapped in banana leaf) which went beyond the usual rendition of otahs with strong notes of lemongrass as well as a distinct, pleasant sweetness. We enjoyed the beef rendang as well - the gravy was again amazing - though the meat could be slightly more fork tender and the sauce was on the oilier side. Our least favourite dish was the bakwan kepiting - a soup served with two crab and chicken meatball that we found a tad too chewy and bouncy. The soup was light and flavourful, but nothing to shout about.

There’s also something to be said about the ambience - set in an old shophouse, the restaurant was adorned with trinkets and items reflecting peranakan culture. We can imagine how this would be excellent for business lunches or for an atas high tea experience 😁

Overall, while we found the food here to be some of the best peranakan food we’ve had in a restaurant (even better than places in Malaysia, according to our parents!), the portions were quite meagre and therefore pricey. If not for the price, we could see ourselves returning regularly😌

I know my title is biased already but it’s really difficult to have a bad meal at True Blue. Impossible really. Especially when they do crowd favourites like Chap Chye so well. I’m Hainanese so we’re known to be very particular about Chap Chye, even if it isn’t the Hainanese version (yes there is a difference!!) A must-order for anyone visiting True Blue.

3.75⭐ Bought the chope voucher during the birthday sale @50% discount. On hindsight I should have purchased the $100 voucher instead of $50 as the price of the dishes are not cheap. We ordered 3 dishes and rice is freeflow and chargeable at $3.50 per pax. The beef rendang is one of the best we had. The gravy is thick and fragrant but portion is so little. Ayam Buah Keluak is good but has an acquired taste which not everyone can appreciate. It's hard to describe the taste. WB tried eating the buah keluak when i told him it's not edible as it's so hard. 🤣 We added on the salted vege duck soup which we find it mediocre. The most surprising thing is that the free flow white rice is so so so good, it's so fragrant and firm. I wonder which rice brand they use? 🤔

We also ordered this as additional meal and glad we got this. The assam curry with fish was delicious and you can’t stop yourself from finishing the assam curry. $18++
