Scoring a great yakiniku deal at Wano Niku, the no-frills stall had quite the array of red meats. Perfect for a pocket-friendly, fuss-free protein fix, there was the Signature Wano Niku (Karubi & Loin mix) which goes for as low as $9/ 100g but the greedy me had that as well as the limited-time-only "Ghib Ojisan Special set” which consist of A5 Ribeye Steak (100g) and Japanese Wagyu Beef Rump Steak (100g) at $50.

Utterly impressed by the quality, I love the savoury house marinate that they use with the ribs and loin mix. For under $10, the option gives you the best bang for your buck and the cut was so soft, melty and juicy - simply great with a steaming bowl of rice.

However, for that premium hit, the "Ghib Ojisan Special set” was super shiok - went to beef heaven. The rather thick cuts were flavourful with just the right amount of beefiness. The A5-grade wagyu was beautifully marbled and boosted a great tenderness as well as taste. The Rump Steak was slightly leaner yet just as satisfying with a more substantial and textured bite.

Pork belly is probably the most famous and popular cut of pork. The pork collar cut is a lesser known cut that has grown popular in recent years. This cut is a little leaner and less tender than pork belly but it is more economical and robust in its flavours.

Wano Niku serves both cuts of pork at about the same price (20 cents cheaper for the pork collar). I love both cuts of pork but find that pork belly gets a little too greasy and rich on the palate after sometime. In contrast, the pork collar is a little lighter on the palate which means that you get to enjoy much more of it without feeling gelat (or sick of it).

Try both and let me know which you prefer!

We were back at Wano Niku to check out their donburi.

Wano Niku's donburis are perfect for those who prefer to leave the grilling to the professionals and have a fuss-free (and ahem odour-free) meal. For $9.50, you get a bowl of Niigata rice topped with 100g of Japanese A4 wagyu karubi / loin mix and some kimchi. You can (of course!) up size your donburi with an additional 50g of meats for $4.

This is an excellent deal considering that each 100g serving of their signature yakiniku costs $8, and you gotta top up $3 for a bowl of rice, kimchi and miso soup! In short, you get to save $1.50 for being lazy 🤣 and taking the easy way out!

And for those who are worried about over cooking or under cooking your meats, Wano Niku's donburis will solve all your problems!

What I really like and appreciate about Wano Niku is the effort and work they put into ensuring that you enjoy your dining experience with an assortments and condiments.

Miss K and I were addicted to their grated garlic. The nutty sweet flavours and pungent aroma of the grated garlic only served to enhance the savoury and buttery rich notes of the wagyu beef and Kumamoto pork.

Yes, dining is in a hot and grimy kopitiam setting (and next to a car park). If you ignore all this, the food and service is restaurant-grade. They very kindly offered to shift us to another spot because it was drizzling andour original table was partially sheltered.

Most people are (rightfully) drawn to Wano Niku for their awesome and affordably priced
Japanese wagyu beef but do not ignore their Kumamoto pork belly and pork collar which are equally good as well! The pork is tender and juicy with a rich intense flavour.

For the kitchen nerds, Wano Niku's hot plate is served with a bbq grill mat which prevents your meat from sticking to the grill!

If you are alone or a little more budget conscious, you can get Wako Niku's signature yakiniku meats for $8 per 100g.

The meats are a mix of karubi and loin "scraps" marinated in one of their three signature sauces - the original, aka (i.e. spicy) or shiro (salt based). I personally prefer their original and shiro sauce but those who like a fiery kick will definitely like their aka sauce!
