Does anyone remember that Mothership article from a while back promoting a small, humble Japanese eatery in Potong Pasir run by a lady who set it up because her daughter loves Japanese food? Well, Washoku Café is the eatery in that article.

Granted, the soft shell crab wafu pasta ($14.80 nett) wasn’t the most exceptional ever, but it was simple yet truly delicious. The meaty soft shell crabs are charmingly crisp on the outside, yet soft and tender on the inside.

The al dente pasta takes a dip in the savory shoyu broth that is sufficiently savory yet light on the palate. The tender enoki mushrooms have been cooked in the same shoyu broth in the plate, and provide a nice, well rounded earthiness to the plate.

Simple, yet so satisfying to the soul.

Japanese-fusion - Soaked in delicious sauce, this quick and light meal is done up in a mere 5-10 mins. Great for take-aways.

Crispy thin pizza, decent taste, affordably priced. It was so disheartening to see that this cafe was so empty :(( A rare gem in the neighbourhood 😬

A refreshing change from the usual cream, tomato or aglio-olio base, I thought that the Soft Shell Crab Wafu Pasta (S$13.50) was a refreshing and a compatible pairing. Because the Dashi broth packed a mild umami taste, tossing in some mushrooms and spaghetti only lightens the carb-loaded main course.

Of course, the soft shell crab was already cut into halves for easy consumption, so using a knife is not necessary. However, if the soft shell crab is more lightly-battered, it probably would not be as hard and eating it together with the dashi broth would be a similar experience to dipping tempura into tempura sauce.

Something was just not right about this cup of Latte (S$4.50). A half-full coffee cup is already unimpressive, what’s more when there is no aroma, and the drink was tasteless other than being bitter.

Looking at the rest of their menu, a canned drink would probably fare better than this.
