Checked out the fairly new Yakone Foods Cheong Fun located within 94 Eating House at Blk 654 Yishun Avenue 4, which also houses the relatively well-known Do & Me Fried Chicken & Western Cuisine. The HDB block is situated a short walking distance away from SAFRA Yishun. Opened since end May 2022, the stall is located beside a tze-char stall named Mei Ji Da Pai Dang, and serves up various styles of Hong Kong-style Chee Cheong Fun. On first look, the menu at Yakone Foods Cheong Fun does seem to be really similar to what is being served up at Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun — this includes the Fresh Mushroom Cheong Fun, as well as the usual suspects at other stalls including char siew and fresh prawns.

Whilst we would usually go for the Fresh Prawns Cheong Fun under usual circumstances, we found ourselves going for the Vege Goose Cheong Fun — the only time we had come across vegetarian goose being served together with Hong Kong-style Chee Cheong Fun being at Wan Fen Chee Cheong Fun located in The Bullion Hawker Bar along East Coast Road. Whilst Wan Fen Chee Cheong Fun serves their rendition of the same dish with the vegetarian goose on the side, Yakone Foods Cheong Fun serves theirs rolled within the chee cheong fun instead; also the way that we preferred. We had initial fears that the vegetarian goose would have turned soft and limp considering how it could potentially absorb all the soy sauce beneath since it was rolled into the chee cheong fun. Our fears were unfounded when we realised that the vegetarian goose was, for the most part, crisp — also kudos to them considering how the vegetarian goose was also not particularly greasy as well. Otherwise, the chee cheong fun here is smooth and silken as per what one would have expected out of Hong Kong-style Chee Cheong Fun, while the soy sauce used here gives the dish sufficient flavour being mostly savoury, yet slightly sweet. Dabbing a bit of the chilli to the chee cheong fun also further enhances the flavours of the dish — adds an umami note with a mildly spicy kick.

With so many stalls specialising in Hong Kong-style Chee Cheong Fun of the late, it does get a little difficult for such stalls to distinguish themselves from one another — Yakone Foods Cheong Fun’s offerings for seen a little synonymous to the likes of other stalks such as Chef Wei HK Cheong Fun; that being said, the chee cheong fun at Yakone Foods Cheong Fun is of a relatively good quality that one would expect out of a stall situated in the heartlands. Prices of the various Cheong Funs are also fairly reasonable — the plain version being priced at $3, whilst the others with the exception of the Fresh Prawn Cheong Fun (which is priced at $5) are priced at $4. Overall, a pretty decent eat in the neighbourhood that we would not mind going for if we find ourselves in the area again.
