The focus for this year’s set menus is on unique ingredients such as Yunnan solo clove black garlic and Hakka preserved vegetables that are added into the dishes. These Yunnan-style dishes will be available for dine-in, takeaway and delivery from 18 January to 15 February.

Start each festive meal with the Prosperity Abalone Yu Sheng ($68.80/$88.80) before indulging in the popular YUN NANS Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot ($298/$458) that comes in a golden broth base that has been stewed for more than six hours using Jinhua ham, old hens, pork bones and many other ingredients. To go with the umami broth, a medley of ingredients is added to it such as roast pork belly, wild golden fungus, sea cucumber, abalone, scallops, prawns, mushrooms, fish maw, cordyceps flowers, yam and Chinese cabbage.

For the new highlights in the set menus this year, there are three dishes that are in the spotlight, namely the Black Garlic Kampong Chicken Soup made with the fermented black garlic that is high in antioxidants with health benefits such as reducing risk of heart disease, protecting brain health and regulating blood sugar. The soup also contains dried scallops, bamboo pith and cordyceps flowers for that additional flavour and nutritional value. The Steamed Jade Perch, that is locally farmed, can be cooked either in spicy garlic lime or Hong Kong style. This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and the meat has a smooth and delicate texture, and with the cooking method of the spicy garlic lime, this dish is very appetizing that will make you continue to eat more. Last but not least, the Steamed Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaf is usually an oversight dish as most people would be full by then, but do not skip on this dish as the addition of the Hakka preserved vegetables gives it a nice balance of sweet and savoury, with a unique flavour and fragrance in every mouthful.

The dish contains 米线 in a prawn broth and it was pretty decent for $14.90++. The prawn broth could be a little more flavourful though...

We saw the advertisement about Yun Nans Steamed Pot Chicken Soup outside the restaurant and we were surprised to find that there was no water added to the dish and instead, the soup was made from the condensate during the boiling process. We decided that we had to order it as it appeared to be one of the restaurant's most interesting dishes! 😁

However, we found the soup to be a little disappointing as the chicken flavour was really mild and to top it off, it was pretty greasy as well. You can see an obvious layer of oil over the surface of the soup. 😰 The pieces of chicken were also pretty tough and they might have been boiled for a little too long. We were told to remove the chicken meat and place them in the separate plate provided so that we can pour the restaurant's mala sauce over the meat. Thankfully, the mala sauce was great as it gave the chicken a spicy and numbing flavour since it would otherwise be a little bland.

For $23.90++, we honestly would not order the dish again as we are fairly sure that we would be able to find better chicken soup outside.

The dish was really the star of our lunch at Yun Nans today. The fish was freshly grilled and it was served to us piping hot and that made the fish taste really great! The exterior was charred slightly and it was covered in quite a lot of chilli powder, which gave the dish a smokey and spicy taste to it. The dish was a lot spicier than we expected to be honest, and if you are not good with spicy food, you may want to avoid eating the skin.

The meat of the fish was cooked pretty well too! It was not overcooked and the texture was just right! You may want to squeeze some of the lime provided over the meat (and not just the fish skin) because the meat can be a little plain on its own. For $22.90++, the dish was a steal, as the quality is great and the serving size is sufficient to feed 3 to 4 pax.
