Even though you order the CNY Set Menus at Yun Nans, you can request to switch out an item if you top up the difference. That’s why although we had the “Wealth” Set Menu ($328++ for 3-4 pax but proved plenty for the 5 of us), we swopped the default Tossed Noodles with Crab Meat, Fish Roe and Mixed Vegetables, for the Golden Poached Rice with Seafood in Prawn Broth 五谷丰收 (海鲜虾汤泡脆金米) which I was very happy about because that dish turned out to be spectacular - deeply sweet and delicious, and brimming with fresh clams and prawns. Adding crunch for extra texture were some crispy rice pops.
The best news is this dish will remain on the menu even after Chinese New Year is over. Yay!

I was fortunate enough to be invited to another early Chinese New Year celebration meal. This time, it was by co-owner Reuben Chua of @yunnanssg, a Chinese casual dining restaurant which so happens to be one of my current favourites. Joining us at the lunch at their Jewel Changi outlet was his partner, Lu Zhi Tao.
Since the launch, Yun Nans has enjoyed great success because it is apparent they identified a gap in the Chinese cuisine market and understood what customers would like. For Chinese New Year 2020, they have once again demonstrated that in their festive offering of unique and even at times, exotic, dishes featuring ingredients imported from Yun Nan, China. Available in Set Menus for groups of 3-4 up to 8-10 pax (choose from 8 options, priced between $268++ and $708++), the creations can also be ordered a la carte.
For our lunch, Reuben ordered the “Wealth” Set Menu ($328++ for 3-4 pax but proved plenty for the 5 of us). The highlight was the Yunnans Prosperity Treasure Hot Pot 盆满钵满 (火焰聚宝盆菜). Besides the premium ingredients of abalone, prawns, sea cucumber, morel mushrooms (my fave!), handmade meatballs, egg rolls filled with meat paste, pig skin and other special ingredients from Yun Nan, China such as wheat pumpkin, it boasted a concentrated broth that’s the result of brewing old hen, old duck, pork bones and aged dry-cured ham for six hours.
Dressed with plum sauce for a gentler sweetness, their Salmon Yu Sheng also suited my palate. I liked how juicy the vegetables were too.
To ensure 年年有余, Yun Nans’ CNY menu includes Steamed Pomfret and the pair we got to savour, were masterfully executed.
I thought the aromatic Stewed Chicken with Lemongrass 鸡声告旦 (边境香茅焗鸡) was very delicious as well. While the meat was tender and moist, the skin, something I don’t usually eat unless it’s fried till crunchy, was delectably smooth and bouncy.
You can bet your bottom dollar I will be returning with my parents to have this CNY2020 menu again before it ends on 8th Feb.

We were surprised by this dessert at the end of our family lunch yesterday. Reuben, one of the co-owners of Yun Nans in Singapore had sent over their festive treat of chilled Milo Christmas Pudding.

We loved it! My niece especially, as she is a fan of cold creations using Milo. Unbelievably soft and wobbly, I thought the pudding was simple and done really well. It brought our meal to a wonderful end.

Bubbling away in the tomato gravy are pieces of Patin fish and cubes of tofu. The unctuous fatty flesh and smooth skin of this species of fish is on the rich side but that is precisely why @yunnanssg’ preparation style is genius. The thick-ish tomato-based soup not only adds a welcome tangyness that helps with cut-through but because of the spices thrown into it as well, the dish is infinitely more aromatic and complex in taste than its name suggests.
This was one of my mum’s favourite dishes from our hosted dinner.

My favourite from amongst the BBQ items we got to try at Yunnans restaurant was, surprise surprise, the zucchini.
The heat from the grill brought out the best in this vegetable, rendering it supremely juicy. Which was a wonderful study in contrast when I bit into it because the coating of dry aromatic spice rub engulfed the moist sweet pulp in the most exquisite way to create a marriage of incredible mouthfeel and flavour.
