Overall enjoyed this MaLa Tang chain from China for hearty soup with customisable ingredients served in individual bowls. Could see ourselves coming back when wanting a simple, comforting bowl of warm soup.

They offer 3 soup bases - mala, tomato, and mushroom, so there’s something for everyone. The mala tang was more ma than la, but overall still tasty. We were more biased towards the non spicy bases - the thick sweet-sour tomato broth reminded us of HDL’s version (but slightly less sweet) while the mushroom was light and earthy without being overly salty/oily. Would order these two again!

There was a good selection of ingredients to choose from (allegedly more than 60!), and prices are calculated by weight at $2.88/100g. They were generally of decent quality. Would say that the meat isn’t the best, but the vegetables, seafood (esp the fish), and carb options were fine! Also liked the dipping sauce station which offers fresh coriander, spring onion, crushed peanuts, garlic, chilli etc.

Located right outside cross street exchange, we ordered 2 bowls of malatang - one 小辣 and the other 中辣. Tbh the difference in spiciness isnt very obvious!

Both bowls were around $11-$12, priced at $2.88/100g. We were pretty full after as well. Pretty worth it in my opinion especially because it doesnt matter whether you take veggie or meat. There was quite a wide variety to choose from too — eg lobster ball with row, fried tofu skin, pork belly, dory fish, prawn, cuttlefish, mushrooms etc.

Taste wise: the broth was super creamy! After receiving your bowl there will be a condiments station where the server would add sesame sauce, crushed garlic, chilli oil, coriander etc. The sesame sauce contributed to the creaminess of the broth too, however the server did put alot of sauce and the creaminess got abit jelak for me midway through. Besides that, the broth was v tasty too as the mala taste isnt compromised by the creamy texture.

We dined at 2pm but even then there were still a few office workers dining there. Can imagine peak hour to be pretty crowded.

Side note: This place is pretty comparable to the popular malatang chain - Dragon Hotpot in Australia :) IMO its 80-90% similar!

Call for spicy numbing Mala Tang aka #麻辣烫.

Zhang Liang Mala Tang is another popular store from China though it opens quietly in our midst. Offering three soup base - Original Mala, Tomato and Mushroom - pick the ingredients you want in the soup and bring it to the counter for payment. The price is based on the weight of your bowl.

There’s a huge selection of ingredients to choose from though due to the current situation staff will pick the ingredients for you. Upon collection, there’s a sauce bar beside for you to add on sauce and garnishes.

P.S: Do expect long queue during lunch!

Second visit to Zhang Liang. We ordered the same ma la broth as the first time we came, but a pity that it was way too salty this time round. Tried a new curly noodle (on the right) and it was better than the normal instant noodles that were a bit overcooked. It has a similar texture to that of Taiwan’s instant wide 拌面. They are pretty crowded during lunch on weekdays, so it’d be good to come after that peak!

I was actually pretty scared to order malatang as I am afraid that it will be overly oily and thus undrinkable. Since it’s my first time there, I decided to try their tomato soup base instead!

Their ingredients were really fresh and the restaurant interior was very clean as well. Their tomato soup was thick and flavorful. My colleague said that the tomato soup was very thick but I personally wish for it to be thicker! However, the noodles were cooked till too soft as I like my noodles to be springy with a good bite to it.

For this, I did not order their set deal but picked my own items instead. However, I would recommend getting their set deals as they are pretty good!

Overall, the soup was really slurp-worthy and the staff were very friendly too. Because of covid, they will help you with the ingredients and condiments. I’m looking forward to trying their mala soup base next!

Mala broth is soo flavourful- highly reco to add sesame sauce, pepper oil and chilli oil because the basic broth isn’t spicy at all. Condiments are unlimited so you can always add more chilli (which I wish I did). Ingredients are on the pricy side and I got too excited (and overordered). It’s pretty hard to control how much to get because they have a staff who will help you take the ingredients throughout this covid period so either you keep reminding them to reduce or you just bring more people 😅
