Best Places for Ice Cream in KL

When the sun's blazing, and you're looking for something sweet to beat the heat, there's no better treat than ice cream. For silky soft serve, creamy gelato and vegan-friendly cones, here's the scoop on the 12 best spots for a cool treat.

There’s always a crowd at Inside Scoop, no doubt here for their quality ice cream, bountiful flavours and friendly service. There are over 70 unique flavours on rotation, so you’re always in for a surprise. Must-haves include the ultra-rich Valrhona Chocolate (RM10.20) and the Musang King (RM12.10), made with fresh durians sourced from Raub. The ice cream purveyors also make warm, fluffy Buttermilk Waffles (RM14.50 with one single scoop ice cream).

You can rely on the team at Joy St. to deliver lustrous gelato. We like the Salted Caramel (from RM10 per scoop) with its moreish, smoky flavour, while other bestsellers include the Earl Grey, Lotus Biscoff and a guilt-free Watermelon Lychee sorbet. If you like your dessert with a kick, go for their Rum & Raisin that sees just the right balance of bitter rum and sweetness.

New to the scene, The Puntry is housed in a house (no pun intended) in Seputeh and dare we say it's looking to be a fierce contender for a lick of ice cream. Expect ever-so-creamy gelatos in flavours that hit close to home— think Malaysian Kopiko (RM7), Haw Flakes (RM7) and the decadent Milo Kaw Kaw (RM7) with chewy, chocolatey bits folded in.

Piccoli Lotti has 18 flavours to its name, but fans (us included) flock over for just one — the famous Pulut Tai Tai (from RM8). The Nyonya kuih-inspired treat tastes just like the real thing. Butterfly pea flower is used to give the ice cream natural blue streaks, and glutinous rice bits are folded in to create that kuih-like chewy texture.

If you’re into all-natural vegan ice cream, consider Kind Kones your match. Community-favourites include the earthy Charcoal Vanilla (from RM11.80), Cinnamon Toast and Salted Choc Chip (from RM9.90). Pair it with the light and crunchy vegan cone (RM1.90) or turn it into an Ice Cream Sandwich (RM19.90).

Run by the folks behind Inside Scoop, The Ice Cream Bar doles out adult-friendly, alcoholic scoops. There are at least nine boozy flavours, including Gold Apple Cider, Whisky Cream, XO Cranberry and Smoked Cognac (from RM8.50 a scoop). The Gold Apple Cider (they use Strongbow) is sweet and refreshing while the Smoked Cognac is rich and punchy with brandy.

When in Sri Petaling, don’t miss this Chrysanthemum Soft Serve (RM10) that comes topped with delicate osmanthus jelly cubes and sweet goji berries. The familiar, floral chrysanthemum notes make an unusual but pleasantly exquisite experience. In case this isn’t your cup of tea, there are also Sweet Potato, Chocolate and Yam flavours on the menu.

Hailing from Penang, Rabbit Softserve sets up shop in KL — spot their pop-up bar in Littlepeople churning out delicious Soft Serve (from RM13) that does wonders on a hot day. Flavours change weekly, but from the list of irresistible flavours they’ve done in the past the likes of White Rabbit, Nutella, Butterbeer and Lavender Sweet Potato, trust whatever they’re whipping up is going to be good.

The same hands behind famed Kakigori bring you another Japanese-inspired cafe with even more delectable sweet treats. Sunbather Coffee’s ice creams are all made in small batches to ensure freshness and feature an interesting lineup, from Lavender Blueberry to Madagascar Vanilla and Apricot. Have these with the Monaka Ice Cream Sandwich (RM11), which sees two light-as-air wafers sandwiching a scoop of your choice — the wafer's savoury notes add a nice touch!

Don't look past this quaint, homely cafe in Taman Desa for delicious housemade gelato. Come for the creamy Durian Gelato (RM8.90) made with fresh D24 durian, which gets the Burpple community's seal of approval. P.s We hear the trending White Rabbit flavour is available here too!

Treat yourself at the Four Seasons’ upscale dessert bar. Burppler Jesuis Enamourez waxes lyrical about their varied ice cream selection, sporting flavours such as a top-notch Teh Tarik Golden Raisins, Pulut Hitam and Coconut Salted Caramel. A single scoop will set you back RM15 — worth every penny for the generous portion.

For an after-work treat you deserve, look to Tsujiri for their smooth soft serves in both Matcha (RM8.90) and Houjicha (RM8.90) flavours. You can have it in a cup or cone, but we say go with the latter for extra crunch. For the finishing touch, garnish with yummy toppings (RM2) like red bean, shiratama (mochi) or kinako kuromitsu (Japanese sugar syrup).
