New Restaurants, Cafes & Bars in Singapore: February 2020

Make it FAB-ruary when you dine out at these awesome new spots for simple Chinese desserts, excellent tea beverages, yummy bakes in the CBD as well as modern Indonesian food!

By the folks behind Punch and the now-defunct Ronin comes this elegant creperie set in Raffles Arcade Hotel. You're here for a relaxing afternoon with good friends who'll share good food and a nice conversation with you. Start with the savory Salami & Potatoes Galette ($18), where roasted potatoes, brie, an oozy egg and crispy salami make for a lovely dish. Then, move onto a coffee and Crepe with Burnt Caramel and Butter ($16) that is sure to please.

Open for dinner from Friday to Sunday is chef Bjorn Shen's new concept housed in the courtyard of Artichoke. Grab three foodie friends and reserve your seats for dinner (omakase, from $650 for four pax) at what might be the world's tiniest pizza bar. Knockouts include the soupy clam-laden Pizza Vongole, the umamilicous squid ink Pizza Black, and the show-stopping Pizza Alla Banh Mi — a pizza-wich with kurobuta pork, pickles, herbs and pate mayo. P.S. Bookings open at 12pm on the 24th of each month.

To everyone's delight, owners Chalith and Nur are back with irresistible bakes! Find their inconspicuous bakery at The Longhaus on fringe of Upper Thomson Road, given away only by the colourful stools outside the otherwise blank storefront. Savour the Onion Pizza ($14) or Vegan Bialy ($6), and let yourself be tempted by sweet treats like the Spelt Almond Financier ($5) and Banana Walnut Date Tea Cake ($5.50). Don't forget to have a Filter Coffee ($4.50) or delicious Cold Bew ($5) made from Cata Coffee beans.

Drop by this unpretentious, industrial cafe on Jalan Klapa for great coffee. Have the Spro with Milk ($5) for a potent yet creamy coffee perfect for a midday pick-me-up. You could also opt for a pourover made with beans roasted in-house and even buy a bag of beans for home!

An Aussie-style cafe by day and a contemporary tapas resto-bar by night, this casual bistro fits like a glove on buzzy Purvis Street. Come for a hearty brunch and tuck into the melt-in-your-mouth Braised Pork Belly ($16) stew served with mushroom, pickled radish, a molten lava egg and rice on the side. Also good is the flavourful tomato-based Oxtail Ragout Rigatoni ($16) topped with shaved Asiago cheese.

Another bakery in the area? Noone's complaining. This cozy open-concept bakery is where you should come to for coffee and fresh bakes made with love. Try their unique take on the Grilled Cheese ($12) — crusty sourdough layered with tomato chutney, smoked cheddar, gruyere, mozzarella and parmesan. Keep your eye out for their fluffy Sticky Bun and the Savoury Scroll with pesto and cheese.

Originally Stateland Cafe, Brotherbird has moved a few doors down on Bali Lane. They now serve creative croissants and coffee in a minimalist space, and are expected to serve brunch on the second floor later in February. You won't go wrong with the Matcha Chocolat Roll ($4), Rocher Croissant ($5) or wonderfully tart Lemon Meringue Croissant ($5). Wash it all down with an Iced White ($5).

Set in Design Orchard, you now know where to find a good cuppa when you're in town. They offer a robust and milky White Coffee ($5) made with the Dark Matter blend that Burppler Evan Mua describes as "aromatic chocolate-like nuttiness". Pair your coffee with pastries sourced from Bakehaus — the flaky Chocolate Almond Croissant will satisfy.

The second outlet of burger rockstars, Shake Shack, is set in a gorgeous, crisp white building on Neil Road. Exclusive to this outlet is the Chick’n Shack ($9.20) that features succulent fried chicken breast and buttermilk herb mayo. You will also find comfort in their classic 'Shroom Burger ($10.80) and The Shack Stack ($14.30). According to Burppler SnapBurp 📸, ""there was no insane queue and the wait was merely 10 minutes for the food collection"" — go go go!

New in Great World City is this tiny kiosk-diner by the folks of Plentyfull in Millenia Walk. For a quick pastry, have the Truffle Hustle ($4.80), a truffle-infused croissant. If you need something heartier, order the Corned Beef & Jalapeno Sandwich ($14.90) — grilled sourdough toast with grainy mustard and provolone cheese, served with a side of pickles and fries.

This luxe dessert bar in Great World City is the brainchild of multi-Michelin stars Chef Juan Amador and his protégé, Hüseyin Turan. All desserts can be paired with tea specially curated and blended for each dessert. Choose the refreshing and tangy Moon Walk ($25 for a plated dessert and tea pairing) featuring spongecake, crumble, yogurt, nut butter and coconut. Also good is their non-creamy take on the St Sebastian cheesecake KALEA65.

Grab the girls and swing by for brunch at this cosy monochromatic restaurant nestled in heart of Tanglin's Phoenix Park. Partnering up with local produce farms, this restaurant is all about sustainable cooking. Burppler Xing Wei Chua describes Linh’s Banh Mi ($14) as "shatteringly crisp", made complete with grilled lemongrass pork, pickles, herbs and a side salad. Other options include The Chef's Big Breakfast ($26) featuring Toulouse sausages, braised green beans, poached eggs and crispy bacon.

Run by the guys behind local chains, Pezzo Pizza and Crave Nasi Lemak, find this no-frills eatery in the basement of Guoco Tower for easy meals. Go for the Braised Duck Rice ($5.90) for juicy duck meat and rice drenched in a thick, savoury sauce. Also good is the Braised Duck Noodles and Kway Teow ($5.90) and Braised Duck Porridge ($5.90).

Round the gang up for dinner at this joint on Amoy Street before your next drinking session. A no-brainer option would be the Suprmee ($12) — a comforting rendition of Indomee topped with an onsen egg, braised chicken and chicharron. Be sure to add a dollop of their house chilli for extra oomph. For a rice option, go for the Nasi Ayam Mason ($8) that sports braised chicken and tofu crisps.

Pencil this new ice cream parlour on North Bridge Road down for unconventional flavours. Try the Brown Butter Sage ($4.90 for single, $8 for double), Sea Salt Gula Jawa or Rhubarb Buttermilk. You can also enjoy your scoops on crispy, handmade cones seasoned with pepper.

Known for their salted egg chips, IIRVINS new concept doles out sinfully yummy bowls to-go. A popular pick would be the Salted Egg Rice ($11.50) — choose between chicken and calamari as your protein. Other bowls include the Truffle Rice ($10) with prawn or clam as well as Truffle Noodles ($10). Top-up your meal with a dessert and drink for just $6!

Make this takeaway kiosk your new go-to in the CBD for breakfast sandwiches and fresh bakes. Let yourself get distracted by the trays of donuts — order a Peanut Butter Raspberry Jelly ($4.50), but start your meal with a savoury sandwich. The Breakfast Sammy ($10) is a must-have with chunky spam, which Burppler Xing Wei describes as ""very delicious, comforting and satisfying without being outlandish"".

They offer your classic Black Coffee ($3.50), Strong White ($5) as well as a chocolate-y Mocha ($5.50). Pair your beverage with sweet treats like the Banana Bread ($2.50) or the Brownie ($2.00).

Mandarin pop star Jay Chou endorsed-brand BBT chain has arrived in Singapore. After lunch in the area, head down to this Arab Street spot for a refreshing drink. Have the Mixed Berries Slush with Cream Foam ($7) that is made with fresh blueberries, strawberries and a special tea base. Otherwise, try their Jasmine Green Tea with Plum Jello ($6.50) that's light yet slightly tart from the meishu plum from Meishan.

Find this hole-in-the-wall tea bar on Tan Quee Lan Street with beautifully minimalistic decor. They use special espresso machines to extract the tea, ensuring that each cup brims with distinct tea flavour and is paired expertly with a fruit. Order the refreshing Grape Oolong ($6.60) or go for the pleasingly bitter and complex Grapefruit Genmaicha ($5.80). Alternatively, follow Burppler Dex Neo's lead and opt for the Pear High Mountain Oolong ($6.30) that's just the right amount of sweet and fruity.

Drop by this dessert spot after your dinner in Bugis. Have the White Chendol ($4.30) with gula Melaka, coconut milk and coconut jelly in place of the usual pandan. If you'd like to add durian or red bean, you can do so for an extra $1.50.
Other classics available include the Mango Sago ($4.50) or the Gingko Barley Beancurd ($3.80).
