6 Best Places for Open-Faced Toasts

Never underestimate the power of a good toast. It can start your day right, or help you pull through a slow afternoon. Crusty sides, fluffy center, and divine toppings — these are the criteria we kept in mind as we sussed out six places for stellar open-faced toasts.

The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough

For Cheap and Good Sourdough in Serene Centre
Muslim-owned The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough is a small bakery cum cafe that sells freshly baked loaves, pastries, pizzas (Sundays only) and coffee. Be in time for the opening of their toast bar, which starts from 10am till the loaves run out. Among the unique selection of sweet and savoury toppings, we highly recommend the Nut Butter with Honey and Sea Salt ($4) and Hummus with Za’atar and Chilli Oil ($4). The former is nutty, sweet and slightly salty; the latter earthy with hints of spice. Nothing is stingy here — the toasts are thick and the toppings are either slathered on or piled up high. Along with a good sourdough that has a crusty exterior and chewy centre, we’ll say that they are very value-for-money considering the quality they come at.

Monument Lifestyle

For Smashing Toasts along Duxton Road
A two-in-one concept store combining retail and cafe, Monument Lifestyle draws customers in with their collection of stylish menswear, tantalising toasts and good coffee. Take it from the Burpple community and get the Lemon Curd Cream Cheese Toast ($6.50) — it may not look impressive, but the flavours hit the spot. Crusty edges with a chewy middle (thanks to bread from The Bakery by Woodlands Sourdough), the sourdough toast is slathered with cream cheese and refreshing lemon curd that is sweet yet sourish. It’s priced on the higher side, but Burpplers agree that this is worth every cent (plus points for the warm service by the friendly baristas!).

The Glasshouse

For Picturesque Toasts in a Charming Cafe
The Glasshouse is a beautiful cafe in CHIJMES that serves great coffees and light bites. With natural sunlight streaming in through the glass walls, the sunlit space looks to be a great spot to wind down amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. Swing by for a cuppa and their Avocado & Dukkah Toast ($8), which resembles a work of art — hummus, sliced avocado, feta crumbs and dukkah, all carefully laid and sprinkled on a thick slice of crusty bread. It also boasts creaminess from the perfectly ripe avocado, tahini fragrance from the hummus and earthiness from the spices — Burppler Anna Chung claims this to be one of the better avocado toasts she has tasted!

Gastrosmiths

For Heavenly Toasts with French Cheeses
Nestled within HomesToLife in I12 Katong, the cheese-topped toasts here are well worth the travel. Cheese enthusiasts will enjoy the Grilled Camembert Toast ($9.50), which sees gooey French camembert, rosemary honey, rosemary oil and a touch of garlic on grilled toast. This is a toast that is sharp in flavour while exuding a floral aroma. If you prefer something milder, get the Grilled Saint Paulin with Strawberry Pepper Coulis ($9.50). The combination of creamy Saint Paulin with the sweet yet spicy coulis just works!

For Toasts with a Homely Touch
Bright and cheery with Bali vibes, The Social Space makes an inviting space to unwind over a cup of tea and snack. Smoothie bowls aside, the toasts are also popular among Burpplers. The Roasted Mushrooms with Crème Fraîche Open-Face Toast ($8) is reminiscent of a mother’s recipe — simple ingredients used, but so comforting and delicious. The Toasted Banana And Peanut Butter Toast ($7) is another great option for something sweet and balanced, and the sprinkle of sea salt adds lovely surprise pops of savouriness. As you wait on your food and drink, hang around the shelves at the side and be inspired to bring home some eco-friendly products brought in by the owners.

For Toasts to Call Your Own
From the people behind Sarnies, Pickleville is a cafe that focuses on healthy, pickled grain bowls and trendy toasts. The toast bar stands out with its do-it-yourself concept — you get to pick from their extensive selection of spreads (such as espresso butter and fig jam) and toppings (some fruits and nuts for you?) to create a toast that’s truly yours. Otherwise, there are a handful of mainstays for you to choose from — Burppler Hwans Lim describes the Nutella and Banana ($8) to be a pairing that can never go wrong.
