Matcha can be served hot or cold, sweetened or not, with milk or sans, and has a rich aroma and a full-bodied mellow flavour profile known as umami. Given the newfound ubiquity of matcha in the city, here are a few places that serve matcha in multiple preparations, bake matcha into treats, or simply take the craft of brewing matcha very seriously.

Founded by an instafamous Jane Chuck and her friends, the instagrammable cafe is gaining a lot of popularity. Aside from the regular matcha drink, Hejau offers Matcha with a local twist such as Match with Tebu, Matcha with Barley and Matcha with Kelapa. Even though the pastry selection is not wide, their polo matcha bun is yummy and always sold out.Story of Ono

The laid-back ambience of ONO brings out the neighbourhood cafe vibe. Located in SS2, Story of ONO is your beautiful new kid on the block, colliding with Matcha and Coffee in one place. Their signature drink “When Two World Collide” is a delicious concoction of carbonated Ethiopia Yirgacheff Dumerso G1 cold brew with Niko Neko REN/Ceremonial Matcha Cream. The frothiness of the match blends beautifully with the strong taste of the coffee.Their French toast is amazing in every bite. The lovely bright green yuri match toast is married with the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe coffee cream and drizzled with gula Melaka.

Ijo Matcha is another Malaysian influenced Matcha cafe located in Ampang. Their Matcha Chai Cincau is made to order laced with our favourite grass jelly is amazing with their sea salt Matcha Brookie. If you are wondering what a Brookie is, it’s a playful combination of soft-baked cookies with a fudgy brownie mix. It really is the best of both worlds. You might also want to try their Matcha Bandung Selasih. The rich taste of Match blends really well with the sweetness of Sirap Ros and selasih, and it also looks beautiful.

Niko Neko, the real OG of Matcha, before Matcha was really cool in Kuala Lumpur. Niko Neko reintroduced Matcha in Kuala Lumpur in 2018, and before you know it their brand is all over the place. Bakery, cafes and grocery stores are proud of using Niko Neko’s brand in their products. The newest cafe in Chinatown gives you a sterile and calm ambience.
Their famous cheesecake is not to be missed. They collaborate with The Tokyo Restaurant for this amazingness. Their Matcha Croissant deserves a good nod. Don’t forget to try their wonderful selection of Matcha drinks which is outstanding.

This aesthetically pink and green cafe is playful and gorgeous. The menu in Oh Cha Matcha is a little more approachable. The cafe suggests that the matcha is to be enjoyed with oat milk and stevia which make them healthy without trying too hard.
They have a wide range of matcha drinks on their menu. We suggest trying their beauty series which combine matcha with a marine collage from Germany. Lovely floral comes through the Rose Collagen. If you want something more refreshing, their Matcha with calamansi will give you just that. The earthy taste of matcha paired with calamansi juice is just the kick that you need.
