What's a supper guide without at least one spot for amazing roti prata? We had high hopes for the biryani, but as it turns out, pratas are still what Casuarina Curry does best. Like its original Casuarina Road location, the Macpherson outlet also stays open till midnight. You won't go wrong with the Plain Prata ($1), which is crisp on the outside and wonderfully fluffy within. If you're up for it, try not to miss the generously stuffed Banana Cheese Prata ($3.50) that comes drizzled with a sweet-salty caramel sauce — it might sound strange but it is so good! If you're hankering after something more substantial, we found the Bee Hoon Goreng ($3.50) tastier than the rice. Wash it all down with a good ol' Teh Tarik ($0.90).

Located right by the entrance of Dempsey Hill, this gourmet butchery cum bistro is the perfect brunch location for the whole family. On a weekend, expect to wait about 20 minutes for a table. Thankfully, you can seek respite while browsing gourmet items in the air-conditioned butchery next door while the kids run amok at the playground. Surrounded by lush greenery, your brunch experience will be laid back and well worth the wait. Order the Huber's Beef Burger with Bacon and Gruyere ($15.50) — made with 170g of Australian ground beef (served medium well, but you can let the staff know if you prefer otherwise). With a lethal combo of two nicely charred buns that are pillowy soft but never soggy, melted gruyere cheese, crispy strips of bacon, this is one satisfying burger that will keep you coming back time and time again. Also order the Spicy Italian Sausage ($13.80) to share, it's probably the best hot dog around.

You will find no beef, melted cheese or onions in the famed Artistry Chilli Crab Burger ($25). Instead, what you will find is a breaded crab cake generously stuffed full of blue swimmer crabmeat with two sundried tomato buns and a generous serving of luscious chilli crab sauce served on the side. How you want to eat this is entirely up to you, but we recommend dunking your shoestring fries into the chilli crab sauce and getting some of it on your burger. Unconventional, and so, so good. We're confident declaring that this is one of the best renditions of our iconic local dish. Bring your friends and make a brunch gathering out of it!

Here's where to go for a filling, rainy day lunch in the heart of town. Set on the seventh floor of Orchard Central, Taiwanese hotpot chain Shi Li Fang serves up incredibly affordable individual set lunch meals ($9.90). There are several options for your main protein, including sliced chicken, sliced pork belly and mushroom. This is served with a generous basket of fresh ingredients like cabbage, enoki mushrooms, tofu and a whole egg. You can also select up to two base broths (we recommend the specialty mala soup and the tonic chicken soup), a choice of rice or noodles, plus a drink.

This ought to be the fail-safe solution for when Keng Eng Kee at Alexandra is fully booked. On any given weekday night, you would easily walk past Hong Kong Street Chun Kee without a thought — just another brightly lit, zi char spot in the Queenstown area. But come Sunday evenings, the entire coffeeshop is packed with regulars and residents staying nearby. Order any of the fourteen featured dishes plastered on top of the cooking area and you’ll be set for a satisfying dinner with your crew. The key to success here is a giant order of many things — of which the Signature ‘Sen Lao’ Hor Fun (from $6) that appears on every table in multiples is a must. The dish might look pale, but it packs a surprisingly strong and satisfying amount of wok hei. Other noteworthies include the well-executed Cereal Prawn (from $20) that features juicy, plump prawns buried in a heaping pile of moreish fried cereal bits. You’ll walk out stuffed and happy and not much poorer for it.

This unassuming coffeeshop stall in Hougang serves decent zi char fare, but what you must come here for are their finger-licking good crabs. Indoor seating is limited and can get a little warm, so dress cool to sit alfresco with your group instead. The Sri Lankan crabs ($25 for three smaller crabs, $30 for two medium, $40 for two large) can be cooked in 16 different styles including chilli, black pepper and cereal oats. A major plus: the crabs can be cooked in separate sauces at additional cost, perfect for a big group situation — because no one is actually excited about sharing their crabs. For maximum enjoyment, go for the saucy options like Chilli and Salted Egg Sauce (additional $3) and order the Fried Mantous ($2 for six, $3 for nine and $4 for 12) to mop up all the juices and the gravy!

A true neighbourhood drinking hole, this no-frills restaurant-cum-microbrewery in the industrial part of Bukit Batok has quietly become one of our favourite places to enjoy a boozy weekend. Come with a group of serious pint pourers for the free flow Beer Buffet ($35) that gives you access to the craft beers for two hours. Of the eleven brews cranked out by On Tap Brewery available, the ones you must have are the award-winning Wheat Beer ($8, it won second place in the Asia Beer Medal Awards) and the crowd favourite alcoholic Root Beer ($11). Before the excessive chugging happens, be sure to get the devilishly spicy Molten Wings ($8 for three pieces) or the lip-smacking Deep Fried Pork Belly ($9) to line your tummy. A recipe handed down to the chef by his grandmother, the latter features juicy chunks of pork belly with a melt-in-your-mouth fatty layer.

Nickeldime Drafthouse is easily the best big group hangout spot for friends. The excellent beer list (both tap and bottled), impressively good bar bites and hearty Western mains are bound to satisfy; if not there’s always authentic Vietnamese pho next door to fall back on. There are 15 rotational craft beers on tap (from $10), sourced from all over the world. Each brew comes in limited amounts, so you can be assured you get something different with every visit. Order their 510 Burger ($16) — hickory stout BBQ glazed beef patty blanketed with IPA cheese, topped with a sunny side up egg and craft beer candied bacon, sandwiched between two fluffy homemade buns. Other beer-infused mains that are great for sharing include the I wanna Hold your Ham ($17), a cheekily-named 11-inch pizza made with beer dough. Pro tip: In need of a midday happy hour? Take advantage of their one-for-one craft beers during lunch and loosen up with a full pint of Tennent's Lager ($13), if available.

Head to this bar at the end of a trying day and leave your work woes at the door. Located on the second floor of a shophouse along Boon Tat Street, Freehouse has 16 craft beers and ciders on rotation, all affordably priced from $9 for a 10oz pint. The selection changes often, so don’t be shy to ask any of the bartenders what's new. Keep an eye out for the Panhead Blacktop Oat from New Zealand ($10 for 10 oz pint, $15 for 16 oz pint) — a silky stout with hints of chocolate, tiramisu and oats. It’s not all drinks and no food here. The bar bites they’ve created here are eyebrow-raising when you’re sober, but totally acceptable when you’re buzzed. Order the Cereal Frog Legs ($17) — American bull frog legs that pretty much tastes like a skinny chicken wing and be sure to dip it into the addictive ginger flower dressing.

Worth the value! Paid $17.50 for lunch. Great deal in town! Try it for yourself. It's pretty oily and smoky as we took the outdoor seat and it doesn't have the suction for the smoke. But this restaurant is very considerate and it provides febreeze for customer to spray on the clothes after meal.

Talay Kata, located on level 8 of Orchard Central is the newest dining concept by Jus Delish Group, the team behind @ginkhao and @somtamsg.

Enjoy the seafood mookata buffet in the comfort of air-con, as you feast on a wide variety of seafood such as Japanese scallop, fresh salmon, crayfish, clams and prawns. And how can we miss the steamboat elements. Soup base includes Chicken, Bonito, Tom Yum and first of its kind Salted Egg Superior Broth! Though it can get too salty towards the end. Prices range from $18.80 for lunch and $28.80 for dinner (depends on weekday, weekends or PHs).
