Unwind with Happy Hour against a perfect view of Telok Ayer Celebrated my partner's birthday at Qin as I heard many good reviews about the food here. Here's what we got:
Chilli Crab Crostini ($20) - a layer of chilli jelly atop a medley of crab meat, avocado mash, and pomelo bits, served with 3 slices of toasted bread. The crab was so so good - so fresh and full of flavour, with the avocado adding a touch of creaminess and the pomelo giving pops of sweetness. Goes amazing with the bread too. However, the chilli jelly was just strange and we left it aside.
Lapcheong Potato ($8) - A mix of small potato cubes and Chinese sausages in a mala sauce. Simple, but addictive. Would go great with alcohol.
Sang Mein ($48) - This was amazing. We were both speechless at the rest bite and just wolfed this down without any words. The Capellini absorbed the umami-rich flavours of the prawn broth, made even richer by the crustacean oil and truffle scent. The 2 huge Red Leg Prawns were delicious as well. Tip: quickly start on this dish before the 'zhup' dries out!
Phraya Rum Sticky Date Pudding ($12) - An Asian twist on the British classic, this was moist sponge cake topped with Gula Pong butterscotch (made from cane sugar hailing from Sarawak) and a scoop of Madagascar Vanilla ice cream. The staff torched the ice cream at our table, making for a dramatic finish to the dish. This was a sweet end to our meal.
As I indicated that this was a birthday celebration, they also gave us a complimentary desert of the Sticky Date Pudding, albeit with a tangy cream. I unfortunately didn't get the components of this dish but this was great as well.
All in all, we enjoyed the food and service at Qin very much, and do ask or a table by the windows as it gave us a view of the sunset, overlooking the hustle and bustle of the Telok Ayer shophouses. Fantastic ambience overall. It might be a little bit on the pricier side but you do get a quality experience. Otherwise, just go for the Happy Hour and starters/small plates.
