This east-sider favourite probably has the best ambience for a relaxed weekend, great for a girls day out or a casual date.

Stranger's Reunion is always a trusty pal for kickass coffee and waffles. Go for the Magic for a perfect cuppa, and relax with a book.

Good British food is hard to come by in Singapore, and The Ascot has happily answered that. With quintessential British gastropub fare, you're in for a really fun meal here. Grab a shuttle bus from Botanic Gardens or Newton station to The Grandstand with a few good friends for some cider, scotch eggs, cold cuts, bangers n mash, bread pudding and fried Mars bars. Sounds good right, why not just stay all day?

Opened by the good people of The Plain, it's nice to sit in this space right opposite the Jalan Besar Stadium with a perfect flat white, a constant reminder that you are in fact, still in Singapore, despite the exceedingly Australian ambience. With bare-bones tables and chairs, this place gives off an earthy-cool vibe with an energy that makes you wanna go back and make great things happen. The coffee and service is fantastic, nothing short of what you would get at The Plain. Look out for the gold door!

This place doesn't need a recommendation, what with its history, and enthusiastic word of mouth doing it for them. There's no better place to head down in your shorts and slippers with a few good friends you're too busy to catch up with during the week, and have a comforting breakfast of kaya toast (extra butter pls) and kopi siu dai. Grab as many buns as you can and share! Sometimes nothing beats tradition.

With 10-12 free (and refillable) side dishes, Kim's Family Food is known to satisfy many with it's authentic, hearty food, and generous portions at reasonable prices. Some go as far as dubbing it their favourite Korean restaurant ever! Go for the seafood pancake, and the dak-bulgogi marinated chicken hot plate.

Start with the Pandan Chicken -- tender, fragrant and generous in portion size! The clear tom yam soup is not killer spicy, but terrifically tasty. Order your usual favourites, Joe's does almost anything really well! If you're a fan of Thai Fried Vermicelli, they do a great version. Cool down with their Thai iced tea and the mango sticky rice.

While it's almost certain that the Hougang and Bedok communities are already well-acquainted with this neighborhood favourite, the rest of the city might not yet be. The food is cheap and tasty, and the ambience friendly and relaxing. Highly recommended dishes include the Pad Thai at $5, thick-based Tom Yam at $6 (really hot) and stir-fried Mince Pork with Basil ($6).

Serving huge portions, be sure to share your food here at Gold Food. With most dishes priced below $10, this value-for-money Thai restaurant is great for some mango salad, green curry and tom yam. Located conveniently in Sunshine Plaza, it's a great hidden gem for cheap, tasty Thai food in town.
