Hotate Cream Croquette from @amazinghokkaido Another deep-fried gem of an appetiser is a croquette made from hotate – Japanese scallop. The hotate is transformed into a rich paste, then coated with crispy panko. Absolutely creamy on the inside, and crunchy good on the outside. The restaurant is quite a hidden find, and you may feel yourself being transported right to the Land of the Rising Sun with its colourful décor, retro music and staff in Japanese costumes. A way to ‘judge’ a Japanese restaurant is to have a quick look at its patrons. It is not difficult to find Japanese families, couples and business people dine here after work. bit.ly/amazinghokkaido #DFDSP

Overflowing Ikura Bowl from @amazinghokkaido an under-the-radar Japanese izakaya. This Bursting Salmon Roe Rice Bowl comes with a heaping layer of umami-laden ikura over freshly steamed rice. The brilliant orange pearls of salmon roe are first marinated in a combination of special soy sauce and vinegar to infuse them with more flavour. Serving this bright orange dish is almost like a ceremony, complete with rhythmic beats from taiko drums and staff chanting “Yoisho! Yoisho!” as they scoop out these precious roe. Awesome Burger Basic Burger from BurgerLabo was as tasty as I anticipated. Added an fried egg to it. The patty was juicy and overall not oily. Had truffle fries with grated cheese to go along with it. Lobster roll however was so so only.

The Double Patty Basic Burger Is Amazing Meat Madness ($36++) This was what Derrick, the person with the biggest appetite in our group at last Thursday’s dinner, made a beeline for - the Basic Burger (B.B.) with double patties. A genuine jaw-dropper (and jaw-unhinger), it comprises of two 170gm patties that blends grass-fed Angus beef neck, Aomori Gyu ribeye, Toriyama Umami Wagyu A4 tenderloin and Sendai Wagyu A5 brisket together, as well as slices of American cheese, housemade bone marrow “butter”, locally farmed lettuce, organic tomatoes and a special sauce between perfectly-chosen soft buns spread with unsalted butter. Derrick also added caramelised onions and pickles because he loves his burgers with extra relish. I had the single patty version of the B.B. and was very satisfied with it. But come a time when I am feeling ravenous, I know what I’ll be ordering.

Mum’s Thigh Meal The mum’s thigh meal is on promo at $6.90 until 31 Oct. It was good but sadly it wasn’t great though. It tastes similar to KFC’s zinger just that the burger had more ingredients in this. I didn’t like the cheese in the cheese fries though, they had an odd taste that clashed with the fries.

Thigh Burger Have heard about how delicious and juicy the original Mom’s Touch fried chicken is in Korea, but I guess it’s not the same here because the chicken I had was quite dry and also not very tasty. Most of the flavour was concentrated in the thick batter and the burger was kind of dry despite the sweet mayo-like sauce. Certainly didn’t help the experience when our fries came super cold and limp. Don’t think I’ll be giving them another try again. (Tried Jollibee just the day before and it was much much better.)

Mom’s Thigh Burger Meal ($6.80) Ordered via phone with a QR code provided! Items took about 15 minutes to be served on a weekday night. I swapped my side of fries to cheese fries (+$1.80) but was disappointed by the cheese - it had a bad stale aftertaste. Fries were served at room temperature. Burger was alright, kinda like a bumped up version of KFC’s Zinger. A little dry but has a nice crunch! I liked that there’s onions and pickles in the burger, it complemented the fried chicken well. Meal is on a special promotional price til end of October. I wouldn’t mind getting the burger again but I’d turn down the sides.
