Always wanted to experience the fun of Nagashi Somen, and I finally did! I had the Nagashi Somen with dip sauce, grated yam, tempura, and extra soup set (¥2600).
I arrived early, avoided the crowd, and had the entire place to myself. There’s no time limit for eating the somen, and they’re free-flow, so you can eat to your heart's content. The auntie owner slides the handmade somen down a stream of flowing water in a bamboo channel, and you have to catch it and eat it. Don’t worry, the flow is slow enough, giving you plenty of reaction time to catch the noodles. The auntie will also observe if you want more noodles before she drops them into the bamboo. Once you’re done, just let them know, and they’ll stop serving.
The dipping sauce was hearty and savoury, but it did get diluted over time due to the fresh water carried by the somen as you pick it up with your chopsticks. Since there’s no way to drain the water from the noodles, the sauce gradually loses its intensity. Still, it was a fun and enjoyable experience overall!
The tempura was crispy and included three vegetables, one shrimp, and one fish. The batter was light, crunchy, and not greasy at all, adding a tastisfying texture to the meal.
This unique somen experience is only available from April to the end of October, so plan your trip accordingly to avoid disappointment. Note that reservations are not accepted, and it’s cash only.
