The term warabimochi was derived from a haiku: "hohoemimo Bimitazuzaete kitarikeri"
which means: "have a happy smile with nice sweets". warabimochi is made from water, sugar and powdered Bracken, a rhizome starch. The Japanese call it warabi, It's very expensive and difficult to harvest which is why mochi nowadays are made with other flours made from glutinous rice or sweet potato or tapioca.
I bought this warabi from the Japan fair @ Isetan. All the way Japan, the warabimochi from Bashoudo co ltd is handmade the traditional way It's so much lighter and softer compared to modern mochi, and not too sweet, the kinako powder and mochi melts in the mouth. So divine, it's the first time I'm eating warabimochi and I fell in love with it. There's also other flavours like black sesame and matcha. Matcha is my favourite too. $12 a pack if I recall correctly.
Japan fair at @isetansg Westgate ends 17 March.
