Tau Suan is one of my favourite hot desserts. It is one of the desserts that brings back happy memories of my childhood.
The tau suan here is pretty good; packed full of mung beans. The soup is quite starchy with a subtle caramel fragrance to it. But I personally prefer tau suan with a slightly darker treacle (the more caramelized version as those have a better aroma than those cooked with white sugar).
The you tiao (dough fritter) provides a contrast between sweet and salty. Also, the crispy texture of the you tiao complements the tau suan.
However, there a few things I didn't like so much...
1) The soup 'broke down' & turned watery before I could even finished the tau suan. I still had like 1/3 of my dessert left still and it was already watery. 🙅🏻♀️
2) The you tiao was cut rather narrowly. Too narrowly for my liking.
3) Given a choice, I rather pay $1 to have my dessert in a smaller portion/ bowl, esp if I'm having it alone, than pay $1.50 and have a bigger serving in a takeaway container.
4) being served food in disposable ware. It is like drinking beer from a plastic/ disposable cup. It somehow mars the entire experience.
So, IMO, the tau suan here is slightly above average.
Anyway, I think I tasted better. One of the best tau suan I had was at Bendemeer Mkt & Food Centre. Can't remember the stall off-hand now.
House of dessert sells Lotus Seed Suan (Dialect: Noi Ji Suan; Mandarin: Lian Zhi Suan) as well. Lotus Seed suan is an increasing rarity in Singapore. I was actually there for that, but it was already sold out by the time I reached.
I will have to go there earlier next time round.
