Meng Meng Roasted Duck, a famous chain hailing from Johor Bahru, opened to great fanfare, with queues lasting up to 2 hours during its first few weeks of operation. Thankfully the crowds have thinned and there were only three people in front of me when I visited.
The Roasted Duck Rice ($4.50) should be the go-to for solo diners, but the two of us had the 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 ($16) with a choice of two meats; I chose the roasted duck and char siew. The dang gui (angelica root) roasted duck was its signature item and it lived up to the hype.
The herbaceous aroma of the dang gui wafted through the air as I brought the plate back to my table. The meat was succulent and fantastically flavourful. If I had one complaint, the skin could've been more crispy.
The char siew was wonderfully caramelized and expertly roasted. With a good meat to fat ratio, every bite brought forth its natural juices and elicited a sigh of deep satisfaction.
If you're a fan of roasted meats, @mengmengroastedducksg is not to be missed.
