I have been meaning to try Empress, a one Michelin starred casual Chinese restaurant at the ACM, for quite some time and got an opportunity recently for a business lunch.
Their starter platter of empress roast duck salted egg yolk prawn and crispy eggplant & chicken floss was good but did not exactly wow me. Likewise, their crispy halbut with teriyaki sauce & crispy sesame chicken, and braised noodles with Japanese scallop in XO chilli sauce were well executed but nothing special.
My favourite dish was their doubled boiled superior soup in young coconut. The soup combined the flavours of the prawns, dried scallop, bamboo fungus and chicken, and the unique nutty and creamy flavour of the young coconut.
The sticky date & longan pudding was just terrible. It was cloy sweet and the flavours just did not work out.
Empress was a disappointment to be honest for a one starred restaurant. Their east meets west combination just did not work for me.
