Learned about the new Bros Gourmet western stall that is situated in the Nam Wah Coffeeshop at Blk 462 Crawford Lane — a rather odd location for a new stall to open considering the low footfall of the area with the coffeeshop being largely void of patrons due to the lack of food stalls within the coffeeshop after the very first few tenants which occupied the coffeeshop after its change of ownership has since moved out. Being the only stall that is open during the day of our visit, what seem to have attracted us to the stall was how the entire coffeeshop was just shrouded in smoke from the grilling as part of their preparation process of the food — Bros Gourmet serves up a menu that is segmented into Mains (featuring grilled chops), Burgers n Sandwich, Pasta, Appetisers and Salads; a rather simple menu which goes well into what one would expect out of a modern-day neighbourhood western cuisine stall situated within a coffeeshop.
We found ourselves being drawn towards the Handcrafted Gourmet Pork Burger with Fries from the Burgers n Sandwich after skimming through the menu board displayed at the stall. For those who are not into pork, the Handcrafted Gourmet Burger with Fries also comes with beef and fish options as well. Patrons would also be able to opt for their burger to come in either a single or a double patty option; we went for the single patty option for our order. Looking like any well-made burger, the burger itself features a toasted sesame seed bun, mayonnaise, house sauce, cheese, handmade pork patty, tomatoes, lettuce and caramalised onions — essentially what one would have expected in a cheeseburger with the beef patty replaced with one made from pork.
Digging into the burger, we note how the light and fluffy sesame seed bun comes with a lightly toasted underside that gives it a good crisp; whilst most other establishments would probably butter the buns, Bros Gourmet seem to have went the route of spreading the bun with garlic spread for a more punchier, garlicky note ; the bread itself also spread with mayonnaise and their house sauce for a creamy texture and a savoury note that would gel all of the elements together. Moving down to the pork patty, it is noted that a slice of cheese is melted over the patty; possibly even torched to give it that melty look that is a crowd-pleaser on its own — the highlight however would be the pork patty, which itself was brined to remove any undesirable porky stench that it may carry. The pork patty was brilliantly done; we liked how the texture of the patty was consistent throughout — done slightly pinkish, the pork patty was juicy and tender, carrying a good meaty bite with a bounce without being dry or tough to chew at any point whilst having a crusted exterior from the grilling process. All that gets accompanied by the slice of tomato and lettuce beneath — all of which are elements that provided a good balance to the burger for a more wholesome experience; the tomato providing a burst of refreshing tanginess, while the lettuce provided a crisp bite. The caramalised onions weren’t done particularly soft here, but we still enjoyed them nonetheless — they provided a good crunch with some zing which further cuts through all that carbs and meat that sits atop. The accompanying fries were a little bit of a letdown however; the fries were probably prepared in batches and felt a little stodgy whilst losing some of its crispness having probably being left behind for some time.
Having visited Bros Gourmet pretty much spontaneously, we did not carry much expectations for our visit there. That being said, we did find the Handcrafted Gourmet Pork Burger with Fries being a pretty respectable burger to be had overall — one that certainly showcased their skill behind the craft; this is especially so considering how pork is quite a tough meat dish itself to execute, and they had definitely did what they could have done to make it a pleasant experience here. We cannot say much about the other dishes, but we would certain hope that the folks at Bros Gourmet could look into the process of how the fries are being served — perhaps some freshly-fried, hot, crisp and well-seasoned fries would do the Handcrafted Gourmet Pork Burger with Fries some justice, considering how it is the de facto side dish that comes along with the dish. Otherwise, Bros Gourmet is pretty much a spot that is worth considering dining at if one is to be in the area, especially considering how the burgers are decently priced between $7 to $9 for a single patty option.
