I think I get excited whenever such places sprout up in Woodlands — after all, given how dining options are pretty limited here, it’s always good to discover a new hipster option that is hiding within the heartlands here.
Chanced upon Yukidon whilst scrolling through GrabFood the other day; a new Japanese Donburi stall located in the same coffeeshop that houses Ivan’s Carbina — best known for serving up affordable Rosti with a selection of sausages and meats to choose from. Found myself going for the Salmon Mentaiyaki Don; the item featuring Onsen Egg, Grilled Salmon and Mentaiko Sauce. Their version does bring back memories of the variant from Donya which I used to have when they were still at Queen Street; also a favourite for lunch at work previously — the grilled salmon comes topped with a generous serving of mentaiko sauce which is blown-torched before being served. The result is pretty umami, with a slight hint of char that goes well with the grilled salmon — a tested-and-proven formula, while the Onsen egg comes all wobbly and with a molten yolk which is pretty much a crowd-pleaser on its own; all served atop short-grain rice that is drizzled in Japanese sweet-savoury sauce for ample flavour. Wouldn’t say that it’s an everyday eat with its price tag of S$12.90, but definitely gets the cravings settled and a convenient option that residents in the north would certainly enjoy having around!
