Word has gotten around that the folks at Cold Break had recently made their move out of their Jalan Besar shopfront and had found new digs within the industrial estate coffeeshop that is situated within Chai Chee Drive. Located at 510 Chai Chee Lane, Cold Break is now situated within the same coffeeshop as Tan Xiang Chai Chee 炭香菜市; a concept that is known for their fish head steamboat and fish soup that is also run by local celebrity Ben Yeo. Cold Break occupies a stall unit here; a move that can be described as a little bit of a downsize from the full-scale cafe concept that it used to be at Jalan Besar. With this being said, Cold Break still offers quite a selection of food items on the menu; this includes the likes of the various ice-cream flavours, as well as ala-carte food items that includes Waffles, Brownies, Muah Chee and Orh Nee Brulee — fairly similar to what was previously already offered at Jalan Besar.
Cold Break does offer the flexibility to opt for the addition of Nian Gao to its Waffle offerings — something that we eventually did went for for our order of the Waffles. We also decided to pair our Nian Gao Waffles with the Momo Sencha Ice-Cream — a flavour that is described on the description card to be a combination of white peach and green tea. It is interesting to note that all Waffle offerings at Cold Break are served in a half-waffle format comprising of just two quadrants. The Waffles itself does come with a light batter that was crisp on the exterior but fluffy within — not too heavy whilst carrying a hint of buttermilk fragrance. Coming with Nian Gao filling within, the Nian Gao does add a stretchy texture to the waffles akin to that of mochi; all that whilst adding an earthy sweetness to the Waffles as well. Our choice of the Momo Sencha ice-cream was one that was light and easy on the tastebuds; a flavour that came with slightly floral notes and a hint of sweetness from the infusion of white peach.
